For another project, you may want to do something more adventurous like a cave troll perhaps. I am sculpting a troll at the moment and its not too hard.
They have bigger bases which you may or may not have. If you don't then I guess you can just sculpt one , make one or just use something else circular.

If that isn't in your interests then maybe try and sculpt a dead marsh spectre or maybe a warrior of the dead.

I am not too sure what to recommend. What types of models do you currently have? Are you collecting a specific army? If so, then maybe theme it around that.

I'll keep thinking of idea's.

The troll sounds good. I'm currently collecting moria and Erebor so that will fit in well. It should be good practice and a real pain for opponent. Could you post some pictures of your troll, either here or in you WIP thread, so I can have a better idea of what I'm embarking upon.

As for the barrow wight, does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the painting or is it good enough already?

Thank you theavenger001. So it's settled, I'm sculpting a troll. I'm hoping to start on Saturday, but first one question. When you are holding a two handed weapon, which hand is on top and which is below?

I think that you would swing it like a club or a baseball bat. That would be right hand on top for right handed people and visa versa for lefties.

Sounds cool, which pose will you use? will he be holding his club up above his head?

I'm probably going to have him in the process of swinging a log around, hence the question about the two hands. I got almost all I need, just need to convince my brother to give me one of his cavalry bases. I hope to start tomorrow, though I may not have the time. I'm also thinking of having him as part of a Diorama, any ideas?

Is it going to be a cave troll? The other trolls have bases bigger than a cavalry base. For a diorama you could have the troll just finishing his swing and have a helpless dwarf flung into the lower branches of a nearby small tree. Like he just got smashed by the troll's tree-club. Then have a couple of goblins scattered around fighting with arrows in their shields, some arrows on the ground, and maybe some other dead dwarfs or gobbos on the ground.

It is going to be a cave troll. I'm sorry for the slow update but it has been a very busy week for me. I need to make the body quite a bit bigger and taller but the legs seem fine to me. Any other advice?


At the same time I'm working on repainting Ragadast. He's one of my favourite minis but when I painted him the second time he turned out too shiny due to the wash. So I'm back at him again.

Any ideas on how to make him really special?

I've been really busy for the past little while but my schedule has freed up enough for some painting.


Here are updates on Radagast. I need to fix up his shoes but otherwise I'm almost done. Anything else that needs to be done on him. He's my favourite mini and I want him to be done well so any criticism will be greatly appreciated as it will help make the final product better.
I've redone the trolls "skeleton" so that if is the right size and will hopefully begin on his feet tomorrow.

I think his face could do with a bit of work, it looks a quite flat and plain. His staff (including the stone and leaves) looks like it could do with a few more highlights as well, but nice work overall!

I agree that the face is a little flat but the cloak is looking great. I'm glad to hear that you did some work on the troll.

I'm sorry for the really really late reply. I've posted this three times now but the next day it isn't up. Well here it is. Radagast is closer to completion. I think I've gotten the most out of his face as I can but if you think I can do better, tell me and I'll try. The rocks needs more work still though.


As far as actual sculpting I've only started on one foot. I have the puppet for the rest of the body done but I won't stay together so I will be putting it together as I go to prevent it all falling apart on me.

I'm sorry for the slow progress and I am myself quite unhappy with how slowly it is getting started. Unfortunately school isn't very considerate of ones free time and I've been busy all week. Though it should slow down next week and come to a close a week later so progress should speed up after that.

You might want to give the face a was with dwarf flesh.
and perhaps a few more highlights for the detail like the face the belt and the feathers etc.

Well, the foot looks pretty good... Radagast is looking better now.

The troll's whole body including its legs are too small. Considering that we are trying to meet the standards of the GW troll next to it.

I'm sorry it has been so long since the last update. I have finished the painting on Radagast but the base isn't done yet. I want a more detailed base then simply sand and grass but I'm not sure what to do. I will be making his base part of a larger piece, probably around the size of a calvary base. It will just have him on it but I want it to reflect him and his role in the book, ie. what he represents. I've got an idea but I would like to hear what you guys have to say and how to do it.

Well here is Radagast. I probably won't be doing anything else to him but I still want criticism and advice, as what I learn can be applied to future minis. I do notice how rough the mini is but that is due to the way I stripped it, which isn't great, and the paints themselves.



I've done some more work on the troll as well. The proportions have been adjusted and the feet are almost done. I hope to get stated on the legs this weekend and will post pictures soon.

He looks very nice mate, I really like the brown colours you've chosen and the face looks really great!
The mini on the pic is shown pretty big, so when stepping back from the screen for about a meter makes it look even better and probably much closer to reality!
