Do you think that there is any chance of the walls of Minas Tirith getting re-released or any other new terrain pieces getting released?

If that new hero is any indication, maybe we will get a long overdue overhaul of the Numenorians. The swordsmen are still cool, but the spearmen and bowmen have been OOP for a long time. To see how awesome they can be, look at the non-GW versions from Spain.

The currently available swordsmen need to be discontinued as well, and new models sculpted.
The swordsmen's scale is the old scale used when the game was first created. Even though a number of old plastic models are sculpted according to the old scale, the difference in dimensions with the newer models is most prominent with the Numenorian swordsmen.

I believe there was another thread a while back where the Last Alliance was discussed as the Middle Earth Team's first venture back in to LOTR SBG and that was shelved for revisiting Pelennor Field. I would think that is where the most money is to be made in a supplement considering the factions involved and the success of the ROTK film.

Like many others, I would like to see the Numenoreans revisited as well...at the very least re-releasing the bowmen as we have seen with Farmer Maggot, Shades, etc...

The irony of having the Numenorean bowmen/archers OOP is their importance to Numenorean success across numerous campaigns throughout the 2nd Age including the "submission" of Sauron by Ar Pharazon. Not that Tolkien's writing on the matter influenced the Numenorean profile by Games Workshop, which also needs to be revisited...

In Unfinished Tales, Tolkien writes on page 170, "Axes and spears and bows they had, and shooting with bows on foot and horseback was a chief sport and pastime of the Numenoreans. In later days, in the wars upon Middle-earth, it was the bows of the Numenoreans that were most greatly feared. 'The Men of the Sea', it was said, 'send before them a great cloud, as rain turned to serpents, or a black hail tipped with steel'; and in those days the great cohorts of the King's Archers used bows made of hollow steel, with black-feathered arrows a full ell long from point to notch."

Relating to the Disaster of the Gladden Fields in Unfinished Tales, Tolkien writes on page 273 in reference to the orcs hunting Isildur's company, "They were silent now, and kept at a distance out of the range of the dreaded steel-bows of Numenor, though light was fast failing, and Isildur had all too few archers for his need."

All that being said, I am absolutely thrilled that LOTR SBG is being revisited! As a player of the Numenorean faction, I would like to see some love finally thrown their way is all!!

New terrain would be great! And, since we are expecting a Battle of Pelennor Fields Box Set, a rerelease of the dead mumak would be fantastic. A while back GW manufactured a resin dead mumak terrain piece. The dead mumak was not for sale and was used strictly in their stores.

I think it's definitely a new boxed set starter pack ... the headline on the Warhammer Community page was "An unexpected box set" so the news was in the headline, rather than the quote that just mentions "something big".

I reckon it will be a starter set with rule book and two starter armies (maybe Minas Tirith/Rohan vs Orcs/Easterlings) using mostly older plastic models and if we're lucky maybe some new plastic heroes or captains.

Pelennor fields maybe could be a campaign book with some new characters and profiles. I reckon they'll then keep producing regular campaign books for various major battles over coming years, each with some new scenarios, some new models, maybe some revised model rules for older figures.

Probably this will gradually revise/invalidate the older source books step-by-step over a number of years. (Although I'd quite like one giant index book!)

The above is mostly guesswork. But I don't think the new Forge World models of the fiefdoms stuff (resin) would be in the new box set, as starter sets are normally plastic.

Maybe Easterlings,as they were actually sent to Dale and Erebor. Useful for hobbit armies. However, I would love some Minas Tirith walls. Anything. Where is the announcement, and when does it come out?

Found the announcement. Here it is.
And that’s not all. Over the last few years, gaming in Middle-earth has seen something of a renaissance. With Forge World having vastly expanded the world of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey™ Strategy Battle Game with a range of models, gaming events across the world consistently drawing considerable crowds and Battle Companies allowing players to fight epic campaigns with only a handful of models, the Middle-earth Team have decided it’s finally time to release something big – and the Battle of Pelennor Fields is just the start. Watch this space for further announcements…

Really disappointed for the lack of new miniatures, didn't expect a whole new box but at least one mini-units and one characters for side :( .

The good news (besides of course the new edition and the finally new brand) is that theoden and the fact it will be the first of a new release for plastic characters!

Hope for the best but for me is not a great start, relaunch a game with so old miniatures is a bit "meh"

So, after the fairly random plastic Legolas and Tauriel (and the figures in the boxed games of course), plastic character sculpts for LotR will be a thing after all! And new rules, and a single book with (revised) profiles after all. Just a few more weeks to wait...

To be honest, I'd rather have separate releases of new figures than all kinds of stuff only available in the starter set!

Wonder what the price of the big box will be though - the pricetag for the individual components adds up to rather a lot; much more than would be practical for a starter set.

I think the interesting thing is the model count seems to suggest that warbands will no longer be a thing.

A great new model for Theoden, although the foot version looks rather stocky, especially around the waist.
Maybe his armor is a little tight across the chest. :gimli:

Despite owning more Rohan and Orcs then sense I will definitely be buying this simply to 'vote with my wallet'. The fact that everything has been done through forgeworld for a while now makes me surprised why anyone expected lots of new plastics. I'm amazed we got anything new tbh. I wonder what price range this will end up at.

Because I always like to have the link for reference, especially later:

I had to giggle when I saw the new armour. It reminds me more of a whitewater lifejacket for paddling than armour. All I can say is I'm glad Theoden is a guy, bits of me would stick out in rather awkward spots

The big announcement is certainly the fact we will be having plastic heroes, if not new troops. Don't think of them as "old" minis, think of them as "classic". It's a testament to the skill of the sculptors that they're still being released 10 years later. I love how dynamic the new Theoden is, and I'd be wary of buying him in resin. I think it's safe to say the days of metal minis are past.

I too am sad that Theoden will probably only be available in the new set. But the new rules and Theoden are a pretty good incentive. If you don't want more Rohirrim, you can always visit the Wayback Machine and see how they were converted into pirates/Umbar corsairs. That's where my old ones are going. Boats for all! (Hmmm, Theoden might need that lifejacket after all...)

Edit: The conversion article is in WD 294, but some convincing pics are also in "All at Sea" pt 1, available from the DCHL website.

I wonder if it will come with the full kits of the fellbeast and troll, with all the options like building an Isengard troll, or non-Witch king rider on the Fellbeast?
