Went with Gandlaf. Both are excellent, but I think the poses and fit with the scenery is better; as well as the paint quality.

But Mirva's is a truly epic piece

No other choice but to vote for Mirva as voting for yourself is wrong, good job it was worth the vote.

Genuinely tough decision. Gandlaf wins on the painitng, but Mirva tips it on the whole. Just found it to be a little more focused and dramatic. Both excellent jobs.

Great entries guys, i should have done one. Gandalf got my vote, mainly as each of his figures i felt would stand up on its own as an entry into a painting competition.

I think we can end the voting and crown Mirva, it's becoming embarrassing.
And I never thought mine was that bad !!! Back to the drawing board

Me also, I thank a lot the votes from the people, but I think that there is no so diference between them.

Is posible that focuse more in the global image, and not so as yours in the quality of each mini, but is the way as i normally work, thinking in the global idea.

Also think that I made it in less than one month for a regular monthly challenge we have in "laguerradelanillo" in Spain.

Thanks to all.

Well i have to be honest from my opinion, both entries are very good but Gandalfs is by far superior in quality of painting. well done to both of you

I like both of them a lot - the arrival of the eagles and their duels with the fellbeasts above the battle at the Morannon were something I had considered trying a few years ago but at the time the minis were all or partly metal which made it impractical really (I prefer plastic).

As much as I like Gandlaf's from a technical painting standpoint and the wonderful execution of the scene, I have to pick Mirva on the basis of the theme being "duel". His has the right focus that portrays a duel happening. Where as Gandlaf's feels like there isn't really a focal duel going on in that scene, everything is tending to get lost in the overall scrap. Still love it though.

Excellent work from both participants, the level of effort and attention to detail is impressive and inspiring. Voted for Mirva's piece, purely on the grounds of originality, but it could have gone either way and both have the right to be very proud of their work!

View the instructions for the diorama challenge, the word duel was listed as it could be two people or whole armies against each other, hence I went for the larger option of a duel between two armies.
Shame I lost votes on not understanding the challenge before casting a vote...

These are both awesome. I like the dynamism of Mirva's, but for quality of work (painting and scenery), attention to detail and level of effort I had to vote for GTG.

I think it's important not to get too hung up about number of votes. I've entered enough of these challenges to realize I have no idea how people will vote! Minis that I think I've done a pretty good job on can attract few or no votes, whereas ones I don't like that much or were rushed jobs can get a lot of votes. Meh

Better to focus on the fact you have completed another mini to a very high standard or produced an awesome diorama that can take pride of place in your collection. No-one can take that away from you.

Great job guys.

I voted for Mirva, only because it had drama and captured my attention slightly more than Gandlafs.

Constructive criticism for Mirva:

The idea and execution is stunning. The paintwork is good but the tower suffers slightly from the textured paint as the prongs of the tower would have looked much better if they were not textured, perhaps painted to represent iron. Maybe even having an orc looking up may have been great. That said, it is a very dramatic piece of modelmaking and held my attention.

Gandlaf:

I liked the piece overall. It is well painted and the water effect is very well done, especially the blood. Well done. It does, to me, need a few extra 'goodies' to be engaging the orcs so that it is as dramatic as it could be. Maybe having a few dead gondorians would have worked. In my opinion, the addition of a few orcs fighting the goodguys, even jumping over their corpses would have made it even better. That said, it is still an excellent piece of work and please dont get downhearted about the contest as it was a very tough vote as the quality is so high.

All in all 2 very high quality contenders and well done to both

The score doesn't reflect how difficult this vote was. 2 very good entries.
My vote went for Mally as I enjoyed watching this piece come together in the WIP section.
