Good thinking DMS... I reckon my problem is more to do with my heavy handed shading... If I could get a softer shading in the recesses then the blend to the top level needn't be so dark... Can I thin shades with water or do I need to use lahmian medium?
I would love to be able to produce a nice Palamino horse

Water is totally fine to thin your paints for both highlighting and shading although i do find that water is only really effective when painting one model at a time. When painting multiple models i do recommend getting some medium. Vallejo do a glaize medium in a lot larger quantity and for the same price as the smaller GW version.

To go along with my desert themed Harad chappies I've also started having a go at some scenery pieces... I've opted for a sandstone style, naturally.

I really like this sculpt, loads of nice details... still got a few more pieces to do (when I can get outside and do some spraying)

Looks great. Mind giving a run down of colours used on the terrain piece for future referance. I know you've already done it on facebook but it will be much easier to locate on here.

The sandstone is:
* Army Painter Dessert Yellow primer
* Seraphim sepia wash
* Tallarn sand drybrush
* Ushabti bone drybrush

Appreciated thank you. Next time you paint one of the terrain pieces you should do a step by step and put it in the articles section here on the OR. It is easily good enough and I'm positive that other members including myself will benefit from it.

Do you reckon? It's funny.. I've not ever thought of my stuff being something worthy of a tutorial. I still consider myself as a beginner I guess.
Happy to give it a go though next time I paint a piece

Very high quality work. Great consistency in modelling and painting, each as good as the other, a hard thing to get right.

You've done these really well, the dark grey isn't as easy a colour to get right as you may think, but you've managed it.

For my first real attempt at horses I'm pretty happy with them so far

The pale grey horse is pretty close to white already.
By the time it's finished everyone will think it's white I reckon

The trick with white is you have very little pure white, only on the highest spots of highlight. With the shading you can go very dark in the deepest points.

Gandlaf, absolutely... I still need to add final highlights to my horses.
When I do, I'll add white highlights to my light grey horse which should make it a nice white horse. That's the plan anyway
