Today I painted the board for me and Amy to game on.

I bought a load of shelves from eBay a few months ago, they were used for card making and storing card for selling I think:
Image
Anyway I have like 6 of these shelving units, and my mother another 6 (she actually makes cards..)

I had loads of the wooden shelves left that all pull out. So I simply placed two down, covered them in pva glue and some strips of double sided tape and placed three shelves ontop of them, and repeated for the other two sections. It created a board about 33" by 38", which is a weird size but its all that will fit on my current coffee table until we get a bigger place ;)

To paint it I bought a couple of cans of grey textured spray paint from B&Q for around £6.50 each.

I found an old roller and painted it with Deathworld Forest paint, the roller creating a cool random pattern across the board and then did the same with Straken green

I then did the same with PVA glue and covered the board in various shades of static grass:

Once the excess was removed (used a load of folded A3 sheets of paper, and whacked the boards over them to loosen all the stray bits, then using the fold poured the grass back into the pots) we had our board! I sat and sprayed it with some PVA through a cheap pump spray bottle thing from Morrissons.

Final step was to add some felt sticky pads to the bottom of the board which will stop the wood scratching my lovely glass coffee table and also allow the boards to stack on top of each other without rubbing together.

They're really useful ;) I have commissions booked until October so they're mainly used to store projects and boxes of bits :)

Apparently they were all handmade, but I could never make them without specialist tools

I think you and Amy could be in danger of taking over here, magnificent prolific work from you too that I only see increasing.
Having partners interested in the same hobby can only mean one thing, an interest bordering on obsession.
I look forward to much more.

I had to look skylanders up, believing it to be connected with Star Wars or something of that type. Would it be described as anime? Ingenious work on the table btw.

Me and Amy are going to start Battle Companies using the awesome rules Erunion has kept up to date :)

I've picked Erebor as my warband and painted up my six starting warriors this evening.
Can really tell the difference between the two rangers and the 4 Warriors or Erebor.. quality close up is totaly different!

Usual scheme of base coat and washes :) Quick and dirty like a dwarf should be ;)

You have some good storage going on there, that's something I have always struggled with. The boards came out very nicely -simple, effective but fast. How long did it take?

The river blue colour scheme goes well with the dwarves. It's also nice to add the names on the bases - the unit already stands out much more because of that. I would perhaps add some of the limestone/chalk dirt on them to indicate the dust being kicked up as they are marching through.

Not long at all. The boards were dried ovrrnight, and then I waited a few hours for the spray to dry, painting took less than an hour.

The names are for battle companies, not all my dwarfs will have names ;) they do have some of the dust on them, might not show in my iphone photo haha,

Thanks!

Oh that's super fast, good stuff. Sounds like I could get a few boards done myself then if I just had some more room. Don't worry, sometimes it's difficult to tell. Nice thread though.

The board looks ace buddy! Just debating quite how to do mine as I've finally got a games room so space for a decent board - very inspirational - cheers!

Love the dwarves too, really nice looking colour scheme and lovely work on the bow strings - looking forward to seeing how the Battle Companies progresses!

Some quick MDF ruins I got from eBay. Some sand, grey and white on the stones, weathering powder and the base Skrag brown and then grass. Simples! 12 in total making for a nice random set of ruins, very quick and easy :)

Still a bit of static grass to blow off ;)
