Hello,
I am brand new to most aspects of the hobby beyond the painting of the models (this includes terrain building, basing, and sculpting), so I freely admit my work is far from high quality. Even my painting is rusty as prior to the last few months it had been approximately 6 years since I'd done any painting and even that experience came with the patience of a 12-14 year old. I'm therefore looking for tips, tricks, and techniques both specific and vague to improve my abilities. These first pictures are all of attempts at terrain, but (assuming that this gets approved and posted) I will also put up one of my few attempts at basing as well as the materials that I have on hand so that I may receive advice and critiques that perhaps cater to what I have access to. The basing attempt appears finished, but I wish to place it in my WIP thread because my techniques regarding basing are what are being worked on and improved.

You could add texture to the first tree by scraping the (non-bristle) end of a paintbrush through the glue while its drying, assuming the trunk is glue, apologies if not? For the second tree, you could that same technique again by layering glue-gun glue over the paper and scraping with a brush. That's probably your best bet. The rock looks fine, just paint it up and it'll be a fine addition to your battle-board.

For the rock, use a real stone, some cork or a piece of polystyrene coated with polyfilla before painting. Paint with drybrushed greys and browns to create some depth to it.

First, you have made a good start. I like your hot glue tree. I have been doing this for 40 years so sometimes it is hard to know where to start. This you tube video is 24 minutes long. It will answer most of your questions. There are some additional links.

Thanks to all who responded. I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with my trees and try to give them more texture, but as soon as I have the spare time I'll do that.

All the videos were quite beneficial. I look forward to putting several of the techniques to use and I'll be sure to post pictures and questions along the way.

Hello all,
It's been a while since I last posted on the forum, but that doesn't mean I've not been working on some things. Pretty much everything I have put together is new to me, and I can't honestly say that all of it came out as well as I would have hoped, but I will attach a few pictures and would like to hear comments, ways to improve (both on future attempts as well as on these current ones), critiques, and anything else beneficial that you have to say about the work.

Unfortunately I'm having to balance this with attending college, and as such spend most months of the year away from my workshop. So some of these projects have had projects made since the picture, and I unfortunately cannot get better pictures of the material quickly, but hopefully I can still get advice based on the pictures at hand.

Thank you to all who offer advice. I intend to be on the forums more frequently from now on and look forward to what you have to say.
