Definitely have some slopes around the base, it will help it look like it has grown out of the ground rather than sat on top of it.

Hmm, I'd pile up some dirt in that corner.
I think it would definitely look better if it wasn't entirely flat.

Haven't commented on this one yet, so I do have to add that I really like this.
It's a lovely terrain piece to have on a gaming board.

Here's the next update for you. I added terrain around the foundation. I'm thinking about giving it a layer of plaster for a smoother look and also to highlight the stones of the foundation.. What do you think? If I go that step, do you have any tips for the use of plaster?

Looking great. I'd embed a few rocks into it if you're going down the plaster route.

Outstanding so far. It may be obvious but you need a rigid base. The thin plaster will chip and show white. I like to stain it. I use the Woodland scenic pigments. I am going to recommend hardboard or MDFB as a base material.I like to make the base as small as possible. I bring the filler to the very edge so that the base blends with the table cover.
The stone work looks very good. I like the design. Very well done.

I agree about having a sturdy base. Looking really good so far!

Go for the layer of plaster, it will help the final look and give you a better surface to paint.

There is no better feeling than restoring an old mini. Great work

These models turned out really good. My Favorite is the orc captain - great detail on the face.

My least is Legolas - his eyes were great but his face was missing a bit of detail - other than that, still awesome!

Keep at it & keep uploading more photos!!

Stupendous! I think it was definitely the right decision to base it with plaster. Beautiful work. I love it.

Thanks guys! Especially to Willow and Dorth for the advice concerning the sturdy base. Have done that ;)

Thanks! It's nice to see people looking through the older bits of this thread, especially with the constructive criticism like your comment about legolas, you of course are right and the face keeps bothering me a bit.. I will go back to it in a quiet hour I guess :) The photos weren't the best either..

Actually on those photos there is no plaster yet ;) It's polystyrene which I melted a bit with a lighter to achieve a rocky looking texture.. however, last weekend I put the hall onto a mdf base and coated the stonework and the ground with plaster which now is dry. I will put some new pics up tomorrow, for you to see the progress on this project :)

I'd happily live in that. Give it the mother of all paint jobs, and go to town on the terrain. This is shaping up to be a cracker!
