Close ups are fantastic. I like the warmer tones you have used on the skin and hair to offset the greens and blue. Very nice.

Hey guys

I've finally got Bag End underway. The original "plan" seen on the previous page has been scrapped and instead I've gone for an 11cm wide wall sat on a wooden plinth made from the base of a kitchen roll holder.

Here is the work from last weekend - nothing added to this yet.

So the raw materials cut to size with the plinth.

The basic outline of door and windows along with stair well cut out and basic incline for the hill.

Bilbo and Gandalf for scale.

The details for outside wall sketched on to check proportions.

The stone work at the front carved out with greenstuff. At this point the height of the polystyrene block is lowered as it was far too high as I realised when carving out the steps.

The steps are added.

The decorative inner door frame has been sculpted. This looks a lot better in real life - the grainy photos don't help here.

The door itself, cut from a single piece of Balsa and then sanded into the correct shape. The door will be sitting open so hinges will follow. The door handle was made from greenstuff sculpted over the spherical top of a pin (similar to the gate).

Finally a view of where the wall will sit on the base.

The wall was made from MDF and the hole for the door was lined with part of the lid of a large Pritt stick - the perfect size around Bilbo!

Once the wall is fully completed I plan to lay down more greenstuff on the flat areas and sculpt into more stonework on the outside and square tiling on the inside.
The gate will sit at the front obviously and the gaps either side between the gate and the hill will be filled by the fence seen at the front of Bag End in the film. In order to work on the plinth the size of the front path area and fencing etc has been scaled down but I believe it will still look good

Beautiful work! Using the heads off pins is a very clever touch.

Thanks Dorth. I actually used wire strippers to take them off the pin which was a massive success thankfully

looking very nice. that pritt stick top works a treat and its surprising what objects you can find that work. i ued a sieve for my leaded lights in the windows.

Are you planning any inserts for the windows, like you did with the pritt stick top for the door.

@Constantine - thank you. I just hope this project will live up to it!

@Gandlaf - yes I am planning inserts for the windows using the lids of pens, cut to size. I plan to make the glass using blister packaging and I'll probably add the decoration with strips of paper which can be picked out in the painting stage. I'll obviously have to add the glass in last as I can't risk getting paint on it

Well been almost a month since I posted an update on this but I haven't been too idle... Been painting Bolt Action of late but got some more work done on Bag End in the last couple of days.

I added in the upright wooden supports and the decorative bit under the windows as well as the bit above the door.

This is the finished inside wall.

I added in the little step up to the door...

...and I scored in the brick work and indoor tiles.

A layer of liquid greenstuff applied.

Not sure if you can see this that well but that's the blister packaging "glass" stuck to the window insert.

I then trimmed down the glass around the insert.

I then applied a layer of PVA glue to the tiles and bricks to try and smooth them down slightly and get rid of the polystyrene texture.
At this point I decided to try and do individual tiling with plasticard... it just didn't look right and I then decided to go back to the original plan of scored polystyrene. However I had glued some of the plasticard tiles down onto the floor. What followed involved trying my best not take too much of the polystyrene up with the tiles as I cut them off with my craft knife.

It worked ok, but I have had to apply a very generous coat of liquid greenstuff on to the effected area, followed by a thick layer of PVA to restore it to its former state. It's currently drying out so hopefully it'll look alright in the end.

Finally then, I gave the window inserts an undercoat of black.

So next on the agenda will be the outer wall detailing and also painting the base - once the PVA is dry, the base will be ready for paint. I'll paint the fence and gate separately and add them later. I'll also have to get some more greenstuff as I'm totally out!

So on a final note, I'd appreciate ideas on what materials to use for the outer wall's details as I don't think greenstuff will work for the larger wooden struts and especially not on the curved, overhead part. I'm also not too sure on balsa wood - it's too fragile IMO.

Wow - nearly 4 months since I last updated this!!! I've been very inactive around these boards of late unfortunately.

So I'd started this lovely representation of the Master of Laketown back at Easter but it sat idle since then until I finally started painting again during the week. Got him finished today. I'm very happy with how it turned out considering the rustiness of my painting skills. I apologise that the pics might be a little dark - please give me feedback on this so I can rectify my photo-setup.
Anyway enough of that here are some pics!

And secondly in this post is an update on where Bag End sits currently. The floor was sculpted out of greenstuff in the end as the polystyrene/PVA texture mentioned in the previous post just didn't work. Still have to finish painting the inside wall before it gets glued to the base. Then it'll be a matter of adding the final details and grass, vegetation etc. After that the minis shall be painted and then the project will be finished. C & C most welcome for both items
