Really regret not buying that set back in the day. They've released better sarumans (although that one was my favorite til fotn) and the new gwahir is much better, but I cant get hold of that gandalf easily. GW Dublin had a cracking version on display years ago, complete with bloody face. Very well done

I bought that set, never finished painting it and gave it away :/

There's usually a Gandalf floating around eBay, got mine for a few quid a few months back. I Prefer the Saruman you've painted to the Orthanc one, but they're both good.

Thanks folks.

Sneak peek

Lightning didn't strike twice regarding wet blending. Bit of a disaster so I went back to more traditional layering and shading. Didn't help that I only had about an hour of decent daylight (no good lamps at present)

Also all my good brushes have got terminal bristle fatigue after today. I'll need to replace about 4 asap; they've expired, gone to meet their maker, pushing up the daisies and joined the bleedin choir invisible.

New brushes, two tone priming, wet blending, colour wheel theory and wet pallette. My method has already changed a lot since January. Started on this earlier. Quite happy with Shadowfax, only 2 colours used so far (bar the primers)

Lack of daylight halts progress. Should get it finished in the morning.

I really like the way you've done Gandalf's face, it looks really really good.
And I guess I'm spoilt being so close to the equator comparatively as a "lack of daylight"isn't something I understand lol

No big deal. It just started snowing at 3 in the afternoon, enough to make the mini hard to see. It's cleared up now, but I've tidied up. Thanks for the compliments. I used slightly purpleish washes around the eyes which contrast with the yellowish tones in the hair, as a way of making it stand out on what will be an all white mini.

Nice work Gene, you don't see this model much because its so hard to paint, but looks like you have cracked it.

I'd say if I had have done traditional layering I'd be fed up of white by now. Trying to vary all the whites in some way too. Thanks

Even as a WIP, your Gandalf on Shadowfax looks great. I love the washes around the eyes - purple is less harsh than black yet it seems to add more depth. Intriguing!

It looks great and I am sure it will look even better when finished. Gandalf the White is really tricky model to paint. Mine is still waiting to be painted and I am kind of afraid what will be the outcome :)

Nice work Gene. It's good to see how your painting style has changed, that will bring you big leaps forward.

It's been sitting here looking at me for the last few weeks. Surprised it hasn't ended up on the floor.

I'm incredibly busy at the moment with a local election campaign, as well as managing a band. It's not that I don't have free time, I'm just not in a very LOTR frame of mind.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm pretty pleased with how I'm coming along, but having it half finished I'm also a little intimidated at the idea of getting the rest just as well done. It's a really bad habit, if I don't get it done in one go I'll end up leaving it indefinitely.

Fabulous painting - you should paint in the pub more often :)
