Now that I feel that I understand the basics of painting faces and cloaks, I started my major goal:

Painting Boromir of Knight Models and achieve a decent quality.

Unprimed, I know its debatable whether it makes sense to glue that much of it for painting but newb I am I need the feeling of an almost complete mini for painting:

Started with the face (of course WIP, shadows will become deeper etc.):

The Knight Models do look very nice indeed ... is this your first Knight Models model? I've never bought one before, but am considering it ... what are they like to paint?

It is my first non GW mini and my first mini of such size (72mm). Boromir is so far great to paint, but if you have never done such a mini before you should definitly prepare. If there is interest, I may post some beginner tipps for painting a mini of such size. While I am myself a beginner :)

And hopefully the further progress will show that I am able to achieve a decent quality (I am still quite nervous with this piece).

Excellent, how big is, can you photograph it next to a GW mini?

Fantastic work on a stunning sculpt (I assume there was very little clean up to do)

Looking excellent! Very Sean Beany.

Thinking about grabbing some of the 35mm Knight Models. Seeing this is fuelling my desire.

That does look good and the subtle shading on the cheeks really are impressive. My tip would be to start on the hair and some other area to test how the colours work together, you may find certain parts need more highlighting or shading to keep everything in unity.
Are you adopting a zenithal light approach with light from directly above.

Thanks.

It is 72 mm tall, so about 3 times taller than the GW Boromir. Definitly a completly different painting experience.

Yes, not much clean up to do. However it is quite some work to get everything to fit.

Yes, zenithal lighting. The shading on the cheeks is stronger than you might think, with less light it is more obvious. Plus there is a lot of shading which isn't really visible on the photo (still influencing the picture).

Tomorrow I will start with the body.

I saw your models, you have assembled them completely. I would really recommend to remove some parts when you paint the models (like I did with Boromir, see below). Even assembled like my Boromir it isn't easy to paint (but possible).

I used this guide in order to paint the face as inspiration:

This is wonderful to see and I would like to ask you some questions.
Has the 72mm scale been easier to paint ?
Does this scale give a better opportunity to use skills like blending and glazing ?
Do you think this scale showcases your painting better ?
The reason I ask is I'm considering trying some bigger scale stuff, though it won't be for a while, my wife being on maternity means we have to watch the pennies.

Not easier, just different. With an 28mm mini many of us (including myself) tend to paint not 100% accurate, as the mini is so small that you cannot easily see mistakes and inaccuracies. While its a little bit easier to paint details on a 70mm figure, you will see every mistake.

However the size makes it much harder to handle the figure and that makes the painting harder. In order to avoid this its better not to assemble everything, I assembled a bit too much here, but its ok.

And the bigger size is demanding a lot more detail, best example is the eye: I painted the iris (grey/blue), the pupil and a reflection, and the boarder of the iris. At least I tried. While the eye is much bigger and thus you would think easier to paint you need to paint much more detail. If I would paint the eye like I paint 28mm eyes it would look horrible.

I do think so.

Gandlaf the Grey wrote:

It depends. If you want to show your work to someone who isn't into miniature painting definitly yes. It just looks more impressive, especially in real, not on a photo. If someone is into painting he will know how to judge the differences and will be able to spot a good painting job no matter what the size is.

Of course im trying my best here, something I don't do with every mini I paint.

I think you should try it. You have a skill level that allows a good result. It's a different experience and allows heavy use of techniques.

When I have finished the figure I will post some tipps for such size based on this experience.

So on the subject of working with larger scale minis, with the larger canvas come greater obligations as what was missable in 28mm is now rendered ovious at 72mm.
I love the way the garments hang on that mini - so lifelike!
