The first try with thorn vines did not work. The soft iron wire I tried was too soft and too thick. It broke before I could wind it tight enough. The wire I used for the thorns was also to thin. I will get some steel wire and try again.

Image

I used my tree making jig to twist the wire like scale model barb wire. I just need to work out the correct wire size.

Image

The elements of the gate. Simple once you give it some thought.

I will add the iron work next.

Thank you. I had some good teachers. I would like to pass that experience along.
Thanks every one for the nice comments.

Iron work was made with plastic cocktail sticks.

Base coated elements.

Final fitting with new keystone.
I am going to make the thorns and fit them before I attach the elements to the base.

I thought some of the bricks looked like teeth so I made a face.I have used it for a demon door and a fire place.

Looking good. Do you have one of the Twilight Ringwraiths to go with it?

I am not sure where I got the statues sorry. ?E Bob?
Thanks for the nice comments. I have not had much time this week. I have tried a few different things with the thorns. I am not happy with the result yet. Trying new things seems to be the most fun some times.

Image

Adding the Woodland Scenic armature to the GW tree to make it taller seems to have worked OK. I am not sure of the Sculpey root. I will pick up some green stuff this week end.

Image

My brother suggested I add a down stair way just inside the hall way. I may try that

What if you used model scale barbed wire as the thorny root, and attached leaves/flock mix to simulate thorny creepers/vines? I've never done it, but it occurred to me that it might just work. The stuff doesn't look that much like barbed wire anyway!

That would work much like the twisted wire thorns. It is a good idea.

How about using some string with cocktail sticks cut to size and pushed through. That would help create the different variation in size of thorns. As you would be using string you could create a more fluent feel to the root, yet keeping the randomness that would fit in with the look you want.
