Hi,

So I want to base my Mordor miniatures in a lava themed rocky base. I was going to use the new GW special effect (the one that cracks when dry) to do this. I'm going to paint the lava, add on the paint and done!

Just wondering if anyone would give me a few tips on how to paint a lava base. Tutorial maybe?

Thanks! :-D

Step 2
Drybrush in Averland sunset
Step 3

I make a white undercoat,
then solid yellow base,
with red ink around the edges
, and then re-highlight some of the yellow areas afterwards,
*varnish is optional after that

Chest of Colors has a wonderful paint guide. I use Vallejo transparent paints, yellow, orange, red, and woodgrain.

White basecoat.
first coat use yellow, wipe the excess paint off the brush so it doesn't pool. Give the surface a decent coat but be sure to leave a bit of white behind in the hottest areas. From here mix in orange with the yellow, straight orange, then orange-red to achieve the cooling look that you want, ie, edges of the lava, and high points. Now do a drybrush of black over the top, and you can use the woodgrain to blend the rock to the lava. Last I take some white and splash a few drops on the rocks, and color them to oranges and orange reds to look like some lava splatters on the rocks.

I have a picture of a Mordor orc captain I did on my website and in my WiP. I used the same technique for my Balrog, and there are a few WiP shots of it, although I haven't uploaded any finals yet. I used regular paints on a Ringwraith conversion that has a lava base. Same painting idea, but I feel that the Vallejo paints give a much brighter more convincing finish. I hope that helps

The above posted photo's really look like fantastic bases!

Another thing you could use is the Citadel Technical Paint called 'Ardcoat' to top your lava off.

I saw this successfully used by someone I played against last week. It really gave a nice shiny and 'hot' look to the lava on his bases.

Good luck!
