That looks superb! I wish that PJ had stuck with the four legged design :(

A sleeping Smaug would be great as a display piece, but imagine how annoying it would be if we got one in Pants-Cast!

No fine cast is not suitable for a model with a wingspan of 35 inches. Even if the model could be cast without distortion or blemish the the fine cast material could not support the weight and break off. Gravity cast lead is not practical and tin would be cost prohibitive. Frankly I do not think the GW design team has the experience to design that large of a plastic kit.They could bring in someone to help. The seams, glue points, and fit on their current large kits like the large round tower kits are pathetic. If the dragon is as large as a 1/48 B 29 I don't think we will see it any time soon.
Speculating on this rumor is really silly. We only have to wait to next week to know more. Did any one try to find out how large the dragon is in the book?

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/05 ... s-smaug/3/

* Head: 3.5cm | 671.47 (previously pre-established baseline)
* Neck + body: 10.0cm | 1918.48cm
* Tail: 17.7cm | 3395.72cm
* Nose to tail: 32.2cm | 6177.52cm
* Wings (from “thumb” to wingtip): 12cm | 2302.18cm

So, from these extrapolated measurements, Smaug is more than 60 metres long, and has a wingspan well in excess of 50 metres!
So Smaug is larger than a B 29 but smaller than a B 52 :rofl:

A while back someone posted the Mumak is scaled down in model for from the rotk film, my guess is GW will do something similar.

Can't see a giant Dragon will be released, the price would be to high for a start, my guess is a plastic kit around £75 with Smaug curled up on a base of a pile of gold measuring around 18inchs

I think gw version will be slightly bigger than the already released dragon from lotrsbg days.
Obviously they will have to scale it down but I don't think in doing this it would affect the gaming purposes.
Roll on next week.

I would be disappointed if it turns out to be Smaug The Not So Stupendous. It has to be plastic, multipart good quality and make a mumak look puny.

Based on Smaug's head he doesn't look all that impressive. Big sure. As for in game, other than running from him in a scenario, what much would he be doing in our game? So a nice display piece because he is Smaug and you probably won't use it or see it in matches ever. It would be next to impossible to make him the best looking dragon ever since many artist have made dragon paintings, a lot of great paintings.

Tic toc... nothing is for sure tic toc tic toc...Even an empty WD means nothing, and a full one doesn't tell us a thing about January, February or beyond releases which will be the ones we all really want.

We will see the new releases on Saturday just after midnight on GW online, and in the latest White Dwarf!, just like last year (why would the contract governing this behavior change from last year?). The only question is will we get a leek on Thursday or Friday when the White Dwarves are shipped?

I'm not sure. There's the 40k expansion coming out too, which will probably get the bulk of the coverage from leakers (and possibly GW). I wouldn't be surprised to see the hobbit stuff glossed over by leakers, or even dismissed as "more hobbit Devlan Mud", as i've seen one insightful chap saying.

Hopefully we can see some blurry camera phone photos taken in poor lighting of a magazine in a language no one can read at some point this week, though. I'm certainly living in hope that someone reports exactly what's coming out any day now.

Just having some info would help me plan around christmas for Hobbit (which is obviously the bigger deal by far). I should like to discipline myself a bit though - I'm trying to mass buy LotR stuff first. (Just got Rohan and Harad to the 500 point minimum i set as a target where i'm satisfied if it goes oop, but with potential to expand if stuff sticks around. Next, Numenor and converted Arnor!)

I find it ironic that G.W.s customer manipulation strategy to push gamers into buying the new stuff by removing the old stuff, has had the effect of getting long term gamers and serious collectors to order from the old range that they are not supporting. Taking away interest from the new stuff as people fear that they have limited time to get what they wan't before it goes OOP!

If this is indeed the release, then :twisted: hmmmm. The price of the book indicates a expansion rather than a new rulebook. Plastic Tauriel? mmm yeah ok. Very interesting find regardless, how did you come by it?

So the book is just going to be a sourcebook. Also, no starter box. Seems like Beorn and Thranduil are just going to be single foot models.

Beorn and Mirkwood spiders in finecast? That blows hugely. Excited to see the mirkwood plastics though.

Looking forward to all the mirkwood plastics. If they drop fine cast and go all plastic I won't be disappointed. Superglue gives me headaches and stuffs up my nose for days afterwards…and that's in the summer with the windows wide open.

Interesting ... what do the colours mean? Barrels out of Bond, is labelled in green. Bit disappointed to see Mirkwood Spiders being in Finecast rather than plastic, but I'm not too surprised.
