Very cool stuff! The conversions were great already, but the paintjob on the goblins is just breathtaking!

Yep, you have me fascinated. Some wonderfully thought out work that's been executed impressively.

Is it difficult painting the models when there are more on one base?

I've been sculpting for about 7 years now (in the hobby for just over 20), sharp edges with putty just takes time - it's all about the push pull dynamic of the sculpting tool on the putty. There really is no short-cut, over time you get a feel for the putty.

In terms of painting two minis on base I had no difficulty: no part of the miniature was obscured too much and the paint job was only base coat, wash and drybrush.

A little work tonight which I've managed to take pictures of.

Here are three Goblins where I've removed the arms, drilled in holes and used paper clip wire, clipped to size, to form the armature.

The second images show the first base layer of putty, green here to make it easier for people to see (I usually prefer Pro Create but it's grey and harder to differentiate from the plastic). To make the hand loop I simply wet my index finger and thumb and pull the putty away from the wire, giving it a little pinch to flatten it out, before I use my sculpting tool to bend it into the rough shape of a hand. This will receive the spear shafts, super glued into place, before I sculpt the arm and hand.

Captain – I think he will get a giant sword

Shaman and minion. This is simple scalpel work and styrene cement.

Next steps complete, plasticard weapons glued in place followed by arms, hands and wrapping sculpts.

This was only a hour or so's work, very rough and basic but fun.

Still lots to do...

Thought I'd post some of the WIP shots I'm taking, the plan is to do a tutorial. I'm working on the Goblin King, one of the Goblin Guard and one regular Goblin. Pretty much all the same technique but I wanted to show a process for each.

I think this is about the half way point, more to follow.

I love the conversions and the painting - really great work and it adds variety to the Misty Mountain forces. I like cork boulders, though I also use various grades of talus from Antenociti as it adds just a little weight low down. The chain on the troll is a very nice touch.

Great work, loving the Goblins with spears and the King is top notch.

Finished the work on the Goblin Guard, this unit is now 8 strong.

Image

The next stages of the Goblin King, mostly washes over the skin, colour layering on the hair, crown and staff, and also some wet on wet blending for the crown spines.

I usually amp up the brightness on all my photos (even after using a light tent) to capture everything clearly, even if it shows off the poor points of the paint job. Here though I've balanced out the brightness to get a better idea of the colours “in real life”.

The redness on the GK skin is great, makes it look really sore, and the gobbos with spears and shields are brilliant.

I can't believe the results you get with drybrushing. The goblins' skin looked blended at first glance. Really impressive work on the goblin kings eyes. The reflections add so much life.

Great job with all the conversions. It's nice having a fellow sculptor around the boards.
