Thanks for the compliments guys. I must admit, that I really wanted to do the lava base. And Mordor seemed like a good place for one, hence the choice of the captain. Ultimately it was sort of a "Hey, you want some pancakes to go with that syrup" sort of a thing.

Here is the other captain with a more traditional base. I was going for a ruined Osgiliath look. Also, someone said my elf fighting orc conversion was all PG-13 since there was no blood. So here I present bloody heads. I mixed reds and browns with glue to get a thick look. After it dried I painted clear nail polish over it to make it appear wet.

Nice conversion again Bill
Looking at the painting it seems a touch flat. More shading and highlights are needed on the front of the shield and the cloth.
I would also do the same with the dead heads.

That's not a conversion is it? I thought it was the second mordor orc captain from the blister pack?

I'd be tempted to make the dead heads a little paler though. From what I can see the bloods quite well done although its difficult to make out as its on a reddy brown cloth :)

This is defo my favorite pose of the two captains and I like the skin tone you used for the orc himself.

More shade & highlights especially on the cloth. Paler head head trophies. The shield - wood tends to bleach as it ages outdoors so more pale highlights with greyish undertones would help there - just a little!
I like the mini and the base. It has a really savage facial expression. Properly orcish!

haha. Correct, it is not a conversion, it is the second orc from the same blister.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah the shield was interesting. The GW picture of it is rather inconclusive as to if it is wood or metal. I used DMS's as a guide and decided to go with wood as that played with the other orc captain as well. However, there was no woodgrain that stood out well on mine, so all those lines are done freehand. Took forever!

I will have to lighten up the skin even more on the head trophies when I do the trolls then. I specifically went lighter with these, and didn't use my normal reddish brown basecoat to depict more of a lack life. I did add a bit of Carroburg Crimson about an eye or two to make it look a little bruised.

Thanks again guys

Decided to take a break from repainting elves (you can find them on my website) to have a crack at this piece. Its been pretty fun. I have the tomb done and the floor. Now to attempt the loose pages and books lying around.

Those loose pages really are good. They fit in excellently and are a nice addition to the diorama.

Nice work so far Randy. You can almost read Ori's account of Balin's struggle in Moria within those pages :)

Thanks a lot guys. Here are a couple more photos of the base. The pictures are a little bright, but hey, its WiP, so in the famous words of Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green, "Oh Well".

How are you planning to paint the marble ?
Here's an idea
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.co.uk/201 ... arble.html
Also you say the pictures are a bit bright. I actually think you can highlight this dioram a lot, bright highlights against the dull bleak background will really add nicely to the finished look.

Pretty neat tutorial. Maybe I will try it on the MoM tomb piece, but I am pretty happy with the way this one turned out.

I am about finished with display, just need to order some more paints and work on the rim.

Here is a hunter Orc I did.
