Game Workshop may have stopped making battlemats but they are far from the only source AND the number of alternatives mats and 'hard' terrain boards is growing all the time. For example:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/108 ... miniatures
http://www.zuzzy.com/
Have a nosey around the internet - there are even custom producers (if you have a bit more cash to spend).
The Deadzone Kickstarter also features mats but they are 2x2 foot urban themed and not really appropriate for LotR though they could be used for any sci-fi game.

Well, concerning battlemats, I bought this one: http://www.blokker.nl/webapp/wcs/stores ... ctId=91971

It isn't as perfectly smooth as the GW one, but it's way cheaper.
I'll maybe upload some pics next time my friends and I have a batlle to show you guys what it looks like irl.
It's 100cm x 300cm but I cut it in half so now I have two 1x1.5m parts.
Small battles -> 1x1.5, large battles -> 2x1.5

So GW discontinuing the battlemat isn't really a problem for me :p

They won't let you start playing. Most gw's now only have intro boards instore which they have to keep free incase someone wants an intro game.

Has it been confirmed whether or not this will apply to every GW store?

The store in Breda has 4 tables, one of them had Goblin Town on it, one with fantasy and one with 40K. The other table was occupied with painters. It was the 1st GW store I visited in 4 years.

It is supposed to be every store but some are defying the rules and keeping open gaming going.

So sad that the company is so out out touch with their customers that managers have to risk losing their jobs by defying the order.

Well, I think its good! I know that you may raise an eyebrow at a statement like that, buts its the truth for me. I dont like there tables anway, same old same old and the models always sliding down the slippery plastic realm of battle borad. This means wthey will have more room to stock more and more variety of their range, which will make them money.

Somtimes, if i know gw dont have it in stock and it will take a few days, I will go online and get it just as fast yet cheaper. Simmilary if gw does have it in stock I will pay the higher price in trade of getting my hands on the miniatures early. So, If they kick player out and pull the tables down, BUT, add more miniatures to there store, then I say good on you Games Workshop.

I would expect to see local social and gaming clubs increasing in popularity and numbers becasue of this, so it would not hurt them.

I can guarantee they won't add more minis in - 1) They have no designs for central shelving: walls only, 2) They would remove them and relocate to a smaller store - it's about reducing expenditure, 3) they don't care about minis being IN store because they have access to the web terminal and can make you buy them from there anyway.

The manager of my GW says it's elective, he was told it was down to his discretion whether to keep gaming or not (although it all has to be booked in advance)

That doesn't sound too bad, as long as you are fortunate enough to have friendly local GW staff.

Me and my mate enjoyed playing a few games in our local gw. Was good to game with different people and the terrain was always different to our home games. The store we used closed down and a new one opened up closer to where I live. I thought this would be great for gaming but the manager said there is to be no in store gaming! There are three boards set up for starter games but they are never in use. The atmosphere was much better when you walked into a store full of people playing a game they love.
GW are stupid.

yep! to both
One of our local stores did not believe in in store gaming. They are long gone. I never got used to GW in store Gaming they are also long gone.
They opened a new one man store about an hour away. They have three very small tables and very little inventory. Of course they can order it on line. The worst part is the manager can't tell me what the new releases will be. So can you explain why am I supposed to go shop there? Or even hang out :?
I am looking for different companies to do business with. I have written GW off as a waist of time.

Our new store is a one man store too. Nice enough guy but as per usual has dosnt know the rules properly. All the decent peice a I'm wanting to add to my collection can only be ordered from gw website so there is no longer any reason for me to have to go in store. May as well be an online company.

If we don't know on this site u really think he's going to know? They don't know, they're not told till one to two weeks prior, and even then they have to keep tight lipped about it. Free shipping is the boon for me and great friendly service and an active gaming community for all threes systems is why I keep going back. I don't get the inventory comment either he has the biggest GW inventory in our state and everything currently available.

Every time I have time to stop by GW I am the only person in the GW store. I was going to stop by Sunday. Every one in the Hobbit group had plains :? Are you guy's trying to tell me something
The old group won't even fit in the GW store. We need to get together it has been too long.

That's a massive gw. Mine's much smaller but they still do instore gaming and the boards are always busy in the holidays or at the weekends. You have to book or you never get a table.
