I have just downloaded the hobbit mobile game, the kingdoms of middle earth. Has anyone else played this game?
You can train boar rider dwarves so they might be in the second or third film, you can also train dwarves on horses or ponies.
Has anyone else noticed possible new units for the films/strategy battle game?

There have been a number of hints and leaks indicating Dwarf Boar Riders are likely in both the films (probably BoFA in the third) and therefore SBG. Although I'm sure they will be effective cavalry profiles I am just disheartened by it. It's just not in the flavor I have ever had reading any Tolkien works. I'm sure it will be 'fun', but just not my idea of Middle Earth...

Is the game any good? I've seen it advertized but never played it...

It is good, it just takes a lot of time to get used to it.

While it would be nice to have Dwarf Cavalry, I would have preferred them to be on ponies. Dwarfs riding boars just seems to go against my view of Tolkien's world.

Not too much of a stretch from goblins riding evil wolves to dwarves riding pigs, oddest mounts I can think of in Tolkien were Huan, a hound, and the giant cats. If anything I think it fits in with the first age more then the third.

By Luthien when she went to save Beren.

Considering that we never got much info on dwarves, they might have been able to tame boars.

Okay I had found that entry earlier today but I wouldn't consider Huan a mount just because he humbled himself and let her ride him under that special circumstance. But that will probably just start an argument similar to Gwaihir being a mount so I shall leave it at that.

As for the Boars, well given the points brought up I guess I can overlook it but it still just seems off to me, guess it will be some models I save some money on by not buying them. Once again its more personal taste then anything really wrong them adding it in.

Boars wouldn't need taming they'd need raising that's all. They're psychopaths in the wild because they are feral. Pigs are really smart, raise them from piglets, and start training them to saddle as yearlings I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Capturing the initial stock would be the tricky part though momma piggy won't let that happen easily. ;)

And you can't raise a wild-born boar to do anything, least of all allow you to sit on it. Much less charging a whole unit of them (which don't attack one another, even if there's a nice-looking female near to two males) into a line sharp, deadly objects.

Sure you can, where do you think dogs come from? Or pigs in general for that matter, or horses, or cows. Pretty much any barn yard or domesticated pet came originally from wild stock, and over the centuries have given way to hundreds of different breeds that are completely domesticated. Not talking about trying to train an adult, but from a piglet. Top that off with how all the animals in Tolkien are smart enough to talk, and Dwarves have skills teaching ravens how to speak, I'd say its more do-able. Maybe the boars hate orcs? Who knows.

Of course your forgetting that you would have to spend generations breeding them large enough to carry armored dwarfs like we had to do with horses. Unless there is some breed of huge boars that Tolkien never mentioned. Plus you would need to dumb a boar down enough like we did dogs to make them obedient, intelligent animals don't like to do thing that very likely can get them hurt. Horses for example are pretty stupid and they still need a lot of training to get them to charge groups of people. I guess if you can talk to them you might be able to convince them its a good idea but you better have a good speech prepared.

This almost needs a new thread, lol. Agreed on all points. I'm not sure about the European variety, but we have some, or rather used to have pony sized if not bigger Boars in the south. They're hunted regularly though, most aren't bigger then a farm pig(which is still massive), no record breakers left though.
I can't remember which King of Rohan, but wasn't there one that was slain & his mount by a giant boar? I remember seeing the tapestry in TTT film related books.

Folca was killed by a the Great boar of Everholt. Had forgotten about that incident. Had to look it up in the appendix.

In the American midwest, there have been boars that have been over a thousand pounds (500 kilos for everybody else). Now, if elephants get to be hundreds of feet tall, and tameable in Middle-Earth by humans, then why can't a boar be slightly larger and tameable by dwarves?

Intelligence is the biggest problem. Smarter the animal the harder it is to train them. Not to mention the logistics of supplying a proper diet for them over something like a herbivore.

Boars are omnivores, so feeding them wouldn't be difficult at all, just give them the scraps of the entire kingdom for food and they'll be fine. As has been mentioned, Beorn had animal servants, so intelligence isn't really an issue in a fantasy world where the most durable material is a silvery substance that is also light as a regular shirt.
