Good to see Gripping Beast minis in a closeup for comparison as I have been considering these as Rohan and Dunland alternatives for some time. I think I can manage a spot of head conversion with plastics and a wee bit of green stuff even though I am not a sculptor like UKFB. Great conversions on the metals also!

Good job that man! Awesome to see how modeling skills translate in the real world.

And actually I was impressed you used Devlan Mud on the picture frame; it's a semi-precious liquid these days!

Ha! I don't think I'll be doing restorations full time. That would be so monotonous. I do surprise myself sometimes though. I did not expect to get it so flawless. I would not have been able to do that 8 years ago before I started sculpting.

The conversions are a bit old now, but I figured I'd post them anyway. Cheers for the comments all 8)

I know I'm about 3 years late, but I love your elves. I am also using a mounted twin as the basis for a heavy armoured mounted Glorfindel.

I wish I had something to update it with! Most of my projects are on hold whilst I sculpt stuff for others. That's either things that aren't LotR related or things that are but top secret at the customers discretion. Which results in a rather long break in updates from me sadly. I will try and get something up soon.

Okay Okay heres a small update.

So I made another Uruk Scout with axe. This time I cheated slightly and used a head from an existing scout:
Image
Then I did a little conversion for DMS. He didn't know it was coming so was a nice surprise I think. It's a little rough around the edges as I was rushing to get it done before Christmas:
It started out as a regular Shagrat mini:
Image
I then snipped off the Mithril Shirt, bent the arm up a bit and drilled through with a pin vice. I also removed the pointing finger on the other hand, rotated the arm 90 degrees and drilled through that hand too. The head I cut off and posed facing the other way. In the lower hand I added a weapon from one of the other Mordor Uruks, which I had drilled and inserted a pin into the end of so that it would pass through the hand. In the outstretched arm I added a wire frame which would be an armature for the banner pole.:
ImageImage
ImageImage
A blob of putty on the head was formed into a tortoise shell style helmet, the weapon handle bulked out, and also the banner pole had the wood texture added on. I then added strips of putty for the rope fastenings:
ImageImage
Next a hooded cloak was added to the rear, and hair was blended from the helmet over the top of this. The banner itself was the final thing done.To do large flat surfaces, first put some talc down on your work surface. This stops the putty sticking to it as you roll it flat with a smooth cylindrical object. cut the banner to the approximate shape you want it to be then attach to the pole in places. These joins can be strengthened later once the main banner has cured. Wash off any excess talc from the banner, then add folds into it by blending small sausages of putty on its surface. Any layers that were not completely blended can be burnished off afterwards once cured:

I'm looking forward to seeing this painted up by DMS. If his recent Orc banners are anything to go by we are in for a treat. 8)

I'm currently working on a WoW Goblin character for someone. It's coming along but still a few layers to go yet and some refining in places. Before anyone comments on the boring pose, it is at the clients request so not my choosing. I was going to sneakily enter it in the Goblin challenge, but decided against it as it isn't a Tolkien Gobbo. This little dude is just 20mm tall.

Wow!
By that I mean I'm amazed at the standard of your work and also that there has been an update on this thread. Southern Dunedain now has the right to be excited.

What do you mean by WoW? (Not World of Warcraft?)

I've never played myself, although I know others that do so I'm familiar with it. This Goblin still has to have a hood added and some chains. You'll just have to wait and see.

:D An update. That conversion for DMS looks ace, you did a great job on it. The WoW goblin also looks nice, though the posee is a bit bland. (if you're going to pay to have a custom mini sculpted for you, why don't you ask for an exciting pose at least? )

How do you sculpt the banner fabric so well?

I recently tried to sculpt a mordor uruk banner and it looks mediocre.

The Uruk conversion is great, especially the banner which will end up looking outstanding knowing the job DMS will do (no pressure). Love the face on the Gobbo as well, the devious/cheeky grin is spot on.
