eBay definition "well painted"

Wasn't sure where to ask this question, but I guess eBay is kinda like a supplier.

Simple question for all of you out there, I've bought lots of minis from eBay and lots of them say "well painted" but when I get them, the standard is often terrible.

My definition of "well painted" would be:

neatly done (no splodges of paint in neighbouring areas)
layer - wash - highlight at least

What I seem to get is often not even neatly done and a single coat on each surface.

Anyway, just wondering what your ideas are, am I expecting too much?

I guess the problem is your average ebay seller doesnt really know or care about the models so to them they are like thats pretty good! .. when it may be awful, its a hard thing to quantify as we all have different standards .. on the flip side sometimes you can recieve very well painted models that you didnt notice so much in the bad pictures and may also have a non justified description! .. ebay is a random "could be anything" bag. sometimes you are unlucky/lucky heh

tlotrsbg sums it up pretty well, you win some you lose some. Just be sure to examine the pictures as best as you can before bidding, and maybe try asking the seller if they could provide other photographs.

On a related note, I was browsing eBay last night and came across what was claimed to be a substantial force of Mordor Orcs and metal Mordor Uruk-Hai. However, on looking at the pictures it was clear to see they were just plastic Isengard Uruk-Hai. Would've thought people would check before uploading items, but there you go.

Yeh this is a common problem on ebay and why i only buy unpainted, and even then you have to look closely as they have often been stripped (and not well) best advice is the advice already stated - look closely and if in doubt request more pics from seller

Yeah, I figure that, I was really also wondering what people's opinions were though, as in, if you were to put something on eBay as "well painted" what would you say. Or what SHOULD you expect rather than what often happens. You know, what is YOUR definition of "well painted" I know it will be different for different people, I was just wondering =)

i would describe "well painted" as gaming standard - all details picked out with the larger areas of the model basecoated , shaded and then one layer of highlighing .

above that I would call "higher level or as often is labelled as "pro painted" - all details picked out AND highlighted/ shaded . Larger areas of the model shaded with multiple level of highlighting and often advanced techniques used such as NMM / Blending / OSL

Oh by the way - Lovin your Mumak - especially the base, fitting into the "higher level" mate

well painted to me is like DMS says gaming table top standard, nothing spectacular but defo not like a kid has done it .. so good use of colour and overall finish, should be based too. I wouldnt say it needs every small detail brought out though that seems more advanced to me.

I know that I am not arrogant enough to say my stuff is well painted on ebay. that is why I put photos up and let the person see for themselves, and let them judge. I know I have gotten the equillant of finger painted stuff when I have bought from ebay before so now, I just stick to buying plain metal and primed stuff, Less headaches ~ Brian

I once saw a mini adverised as "well painted" that was just random splotches of dark blue over bare metal, most of the time the ones that are well painted let you see so for yourself.

People say all kinds of things on eBay, and you can't really hold them accountable, unfortunately. The people posting the ads may not know anything about painting minis, or maybe are just trying to drive up the price with 'creative' advertising.

When I buy painted models on eBay, it's always with the 100% understanding that they're going straight into the acetone/Simple Green/oven cleaner for paint removal. Simple.
