Painting Challenge: Hasharin!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the May Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being a Hasharin. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of preferred miniatures in order of most preferred to least preferred:

  • Hasharin
  • Watcher of Karna
  • Warrior/Captain/Chieftain of Harad
If you are unsure as to whether something will be elligible for entry, just post asking or PM me and I will let you know whether or not you may use it, as this months challenge could be open to many different alternative figures.

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT+1 of May 31st, 2012. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. A maximum of 4 photos please, this allows you to show your miniature off from front, back and each side which is more than enough.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to reduce their backlog and improve their painting skills.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

I'm guessing a Khandish Chieftain is not in the running?

I'll let a Khandish Chieftain slide as it's a similar styled model (lots of cloth etc) from a similar region of middle-earth. A half-troll however, whilst from the same region of middle-earth, looks nothing like a Hasharin. Alternative miniatures are accepted for being visually similar to the chosen model rather than for being thematically similar, if you understand what I mean.

Oh wow, Khandish possibilities! What about a Corsair Captain? Still planing a Hasharin conversion, just working out back-up options.

What about a Serpent guard? I have a huge Harad army, but everything fitting in this category is already painted!!

Serpent Guard or Corsair Captain shall be fine. We want as many entrants as possible in these challenges so I generally allow most things that have a similar style, it's just half-trolls have very little cloth on them and are most skin/troll-skin so have less in common with a Hasharin visually than the other things that are accepted.

Since the official Hasharin is not available from GW at the moment, I ordered an assassin miniature from Dark Sword Miniatures instead:

Image

He's the front left one. Next to him is Cersei Lannister, behind him a high elf, which will make an awesome elf captain, and behind Cercei a samurai guinea pig, which they put in the box as a surprise gift.

DSM is an awesome company to deal with, they deliver really quickly, sometimes throw in surprises like this and have my favourite sculptor, Tom Meier, working for them. They are not cheap, but still not as expensive as GW metal heroes. And the casting quality is very good, there is very little work to be done compared to GW metals.

Since he is no longer available from GW,I don't think that a Hasharin makes a suitable entry for this month's painting challenge. I understand that people may buy the model from other sources but for some this route may not be a viable option.

True it may not be available from GW anymore but there are plenty of alternative miniatures that make eligible entries and there are also tonnes of people who still have Hasharin models. I've not bought a LOTR model in about 2 years and I still have mine. Besides, it was the majority vote for this months entry so there's at least a few people that have it or one of the alternatives.

As RC said, there are lots of alternative figures available, (Dalamyr comes to mind) as well as alternatives from other companies. Not to mention that lots of people will have somebody good enough in their back-log. (Or just get a hasharin from ebay or an online retailer that still has one in stock...That's what I did. (ebay)) :)

Did I tell them that during the voting? Yes! Did they listen? No! :)

I expect everyone who voted hasharin to take part in this month's challenge. :)

I voted for Hasharin - but have since realised I don't actually have a Hasharin DOH!

However - I have decided to throw caution to the wind and try to paint all 3 Watchers of Karna.

I actually made good progress over the weekend - just a bit of tidying up and basing needed. Proof pic and progress below.

Indeed, those guys are looking really good. My guess would be bubonic brown for the straps....maybe with a devlan mud wash?

How come they have 2 swords but only 1 sheath? Silly GW.

Thanks for the comments.

The Avenger was spot on - bubonic brown - though its a badab black wash. Same on the handles of the swords/daggers. Am trying to get a darker feel to these models like BOWT does, but that seems to mean lots and lots of black shading. First time I have done black cloth and happy with it so far - needs some touching up.
