Painting Challenge: Sauron!

Image

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the February Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being The Dark Lord himself. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of preferred miniatures in order of most preferred to least preferred:

  • The Dark Lord Sauron
  • The Necromancer
If you are unsure as to whether something will be elligible for entry, just post asking or PM me and I will let you know whether or not you may use it, as this months challenge could be open to many different alternative figures.

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of February 29th, 2012. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. A maximum of 4 photos please, this allows you to show your miniature off from front, back and each side which is more than enough.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to reduce their backlog and improve their painting skills.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

Do you mean the engraving on the base? I didn't do it - the mini came like that as it was part of a lot I bought on Ebay. I imagine the person used an engraver?

I made a start. It's a hard mini to paint! I've started on the chest plate, helm and right leg. Trying to get highlights right - arrrgh :?

That's the white undercoat. It does look like a wedding dress though! Now if we can just find him/her a groom......

Here is just the beginning of my entry for this month . . . there is much more to it, but I wanted to check and see if it qualifies for Sauron before I went over the top. Let me know what the consensus is.

Well, I'm just new here, but I think it's a fantastic idea and quite appropriate.

@IsleStaggerholm - I have high hopes for that already and it should definitely qualify as Sauron. Good luck.

Here is my Sauron, with some friends:

Image

My objective this month is to paint enough models to be able to play the old Sauron Unleashed scenario in which Sauron and an army of orcs battle the Last Alliance. I still need to paint Gil-Galad, 11 elves, 5 men of Numenor and 3 orcs in addition to Sauron to have all the models for that battle. That's 20 models but I may be able to do that since most of them are just basic troops. I have once played the scenario in a gaming convention and it's quite a spectacle to have the named heroes and 112 other models on the slopes of Mount Doom (or a grassy hill in my case).
