How did you found Lotr?

Books, books, books all the way! I finished reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time (that took like forever) and then switched over to LOTR. Fan of both right now, best reading I've ever done.

I'm not surprised, good books but there's a lot of them. I think I stopped at Knife of Dreams so I've got the last 2 and Memory of Light ,when it's released, left. Should probably pick them up again once I've finished what I'm reading at the moment.

I voted "movies," but I am including "The Hobbit" cartoon movie as that is how I was introduced to Lord of the Rings and Tolkien. I remember seeing that when it first came out on TV (back in 1977...and yes, we had color TVs back then, but none of them fancy remote control thing-a-ma-jigs...we had to turn a knob on the TV by hand gosh darnit!) when I was a kid and from that point, I was hooked.

Wow...I'm really feeling dated.

I had a teacher recommend The Hobbit to me when I was about 9 or 10 and I ate it up. I got a copy of LotR a couple years later but couldn’t get thru Fellowship for a couple tries. I had another teacher that told me to just jump ahead to the Council of Elrond, I did and had no problem finishing from there. I must admit that about 25% of the time I pick the book up to reread I start either at Bree or even the Council. I haven’t re-read the Hobbit for a while but will be pulling it out to read to my oldest son and his sister shortly (my wife is reading Wizard of Oz first).

As I was “graduating” from D&D to AD&D I discovered ICE’s MERP and got the box set (still have it and many of the expansion books). Our group didn’t have a strong enough Middle Earth addiction for more than a couple of us to want to play MERP a lot, but at least it turned us on to ICE’s RoleMaster series and I never went back to TSR.

In addition to the Extended DVDs, I have the animated Hobbit and LotR films from way back and enjoyed them each for a very, very long time while growing up. Yeah, there are issues but they’re also fun in many ways. I’ve let my oldest son watch Hobbit a couple times. It will be a while before he can watch PJ’s LotR films but he can probably watch the animated one when he’s 10 and that will give him enough background to enjoy the games with me ( tbh, Treebeard and Sam are my only major gripes about the animated LotR, and I think their Nazgul are really cool).

After graduating high school in 1988 my gaming side of Rings (actually, most of my gaming beyond limited war games / board games) went dormant. I still picked up LotR every year or two for a re-read though. I didn’t discover GW’s SBG until 2006 but it really got me fired up again and drew me into a great gaming community once more.

The only ones that wouldn't appreciate it would be persons who doesn't like lotr...
Along my cousine and a fellow-lady of mine we are the only students at High school to like Lotr... 3/259 1%
