Special Painting Challenge: Monsters!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the September Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge and with this month being a 'Special Challenge' a broader category is chosen, this months being MONSTERS. Here is a list of elligible entries:

  • Ent
  • Treebeard
  • Gwaihir
  • Giant Eagle
  • Mordor Troll
  • Mordor Troll Chieftain
  • Isengard Troll
  • Catapult Loader Troll
  • Cave Troll
  • Buhrdur, Hill Troll Chieftain
  • Shelob
  • Spider Queen
  • Balrog
  • Dragon
  • Cave Drake
  • Witch-King/Ringwraith on Fellbeast
  • Mumakil
  • Gulavhar, The Terror of Arnor

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of September 30th, 2011. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. In previous painting challenges, the winner and runner-up recieved prizes in the form of gold coins, however with the websites current situation, gold coins are not available to give as prizes, so no prize is available at the moment.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

It will be awesome to see so many different 'monsters' coming all together!
Dag's Gwaihir doesn't scare me though... he's got his wings hacked off already! :P

I'll be entering my terrorizing beast of Angmar tonight! (finally have to make up a paint-sheme-choice...)

@ Hilbert: pm ;)

To tell you the truth I think you have more liberties with colour schemes painting a model that's not from the movies, though following the movies gives an advantage of doing colour studies with the stills. Really Balrog wouldn't be my first choice because there's not much colour involved I find, I just had that Balrog primed and sitting on my shelf for quited a while now whereas my other monsters are in their boxes unassembled. As a matter of fact this Balrog is not a proof picture I'm showing, that's the finish product where he's in his dormant stage, all shadow no flame. There and I thought at first I wouldn't be able to finish this within a month.

I don't like the base of your balrog though... it's too flat. And the Uruk confronting him in a field of grass and mud, that just doesn't fit. There's no way you'll earn my vote for this! :P
If the Uruk would be offering a bouquet of flowers however... that'd change my mind... ;)

About the colours, yeah, a movie-mini is easier to decide. And in most cases it's just followed. Now, the choice is free and you could a lot with a free choice. However, I would love to paint the terror in icy-blue-purple-indogi-colours, cause that's one way I really like demons to be... but looking at the rest of my LOTR-figures, he wouldn't fit in.
Now I try to imagine what colour-sheme the terror would have had if he was included in the movies... which means I just can't get on with the icy-colours I guess... From that point of view, I tempt go in the direction of fellbeasts and trolls...
I've now started with Knarloc Green and I'll see where it ends... (which has nothing to do with the colours of trolls and fellbeasts... yeah, I'll say it myself ;) )
