Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it. :D I'm glad other people like the face too, it took me a while to do and was rather frustrating.

As anyone who looked through my WIP could tell I am a sucker for original colour schemes, and I just got some watchers of karna for the Harad army I plan on starting. Anyone have any ideas for a colour scheme?

That's awesome, especially the face. White undercoat, right?

That elf's face is remarkable, not only do you see features, you see expression!! That truly is remarkable!

Thanks. i do have to give some credit to the sculpt, as IMHO this is one of the better plastic wood elf sculpts, some of the others have faces that are much harder to work with.

SO here is the start of my Watcher of Karna. I decided to keep the black, well dark grey of the GW theme but went for purple instead of red. The only things that are close to done on this model is the dark grey and the skin tones.
Image Image
I went with a black undercoat for this model, considering that 70% of the model is dark, but I find that I really dont like using black undercoats. It makes the colours much less fun to paint and much harder to paint I find.

Also my cave has been ruined due to unfortunate circumstance and carelessness on my part. The resin I was using leaked out of the barrier and then melted a large part of the foam underneath. I might restart it, but then again I might do something else.

C&C always welcome.

Nice start. You're really good at painting flesh. I'm looking forwards to seeing how he turns out.

Thank you, I have actually decided to put him on hold for now as I have seen a color scheme for the Watchers that I like that I might try.

For now here is some terrain.
Image

Its still very WIP at this stage. There iwill be sand pretty much everywhere there are dark shiny parts (the shine is just an arcylic wood finish I am using to seal the foam so that the resin does melt my foam). There will also be a couple more rocks and some more vegetation. For a picture of more or less how i want it to look, see below. I am having trouble with the rock color. So far I have only tried on the big tall tower of rock on the left and have progressively getting closer to the color. I think a couple drybrushes of maybe a kommando khaki like color and then a bleached bone color could get the trick done, though I am open to any suggestion.
And here is the inspiration pic:

I like the area you have chosen to model because of all the colors. For the red sand stone in the back ground try burnt umber over black with a red oxide over brush and a blend of red oxide and ochre for dry brushing. The Out crop in the for ground seems to have a lot of limeonite in it. I would suggest raw sienna with a over brush of ochre with a dry brush of yellow ochre. A highlight of ivory might be ok, The deep water limestone in the river bed looks fine.
I don't often use the GW paints so I am not sure about the names of their brand of paint. I hope the suggestions were helpful.

You have done a really nice job so far. It is going to look very much like the area you have chosen to model. :yay:

So I have another update. This time with Gimli and the continuation of the terrain piece. Sorry for the pic quality, its not the best and doesnt shoe the colors well especially on Gimli. Clickable thumbnails.
Image Image

Only the cloth is done, the metal bits are still at the beginning stages. I might try to paint a pattern on the thin yellow bit there, but am unsure what yet.

And the terrain piece.
Image Image

I am not particularly satisfied with the rock color and may try to lighten it.

C&C welcome as always.

The rocks could indeed do with a lighter drybrush, as they do look slightly darker than on the inspiration pic...

Lovely beginning on Gimly 8)

Thanks for the comments guys. I have got some more work done on Gimli which I will put up shortly.
@RoG thanks for the comment on the terrain as I am kinda stuck on it at the moment.

Hehe... There's nothing really to it; drybrush the rock with lighter shades of brown till you get the result you're looking for!
...I also think that the whole 'wet rock' look down, so try to not modify the shade you have by the waterline... Additionnally, you could try to add some greener shades to the cliffside, near the waterline, as it's where the vegetation would be abundant. It's not on the inspiration pic, so just an idea ;)

This article illustrates what I mean perfectly:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/780/page/4

I've gotta say though that it's one of the best water-related project I've seen in a long time 8) Is there any reason to why you're making it, or is a random improvised project?

It was pretty random actually. After my cave failed I was looking for something to make, but couldnt think of anything so I googled pictures. That was one that came up and I thought would look neat.

I like the idea of using green, i will try that. Thanks for the idea.

This is WIP link:
http://hirstarts.yuku.com/topic/4844/t/ ... tml?page=2
It contains a lot of photos, links to U Tube videos and very useful illustrations on how to make water. If you view the whole post you will see how much of an improvement adding green makes.
Hope this helps
