Im new here and i love looking at other peoples work in progress and seing how they do things and i hope to pick up a few tips to. Please fee free to post any comments or critiques or general advice, id love to improve my painting. Also if you would like to know how i acchieved a certain affect please do ask. I build and paint alot of Airfix, Tamiy etc scale aircraft so alot of my techniques cross over.

I suppose i should write a bit about myself as a gamer. Well ive been playing the hobby for eek about 12 years now on and off and have played most armies for 40k over the years. Ive kind of gone off 40k now and im enjoying Warhammer now. Ive just started seriously collecting and painting LOTR figures with ambitions to take part in Grand Tournaments and also build up some war of the rings forces. Im not an ultra competative player, i more enjoy building armies to a theme and backgroud than anything else.

So here goes with some photos, first off is my first formation of Elfs, i know the cloaks should be blue but i prefer the look of them red so thats why they are red.

And finaly their shields:

And my evil army so far only consists of this guy which i realy am finding a chore to paint. I enjoyed doing the conversion though.

Image

Please excuse the messy movement trays, they where painted with what was left of some goblin green. Eventualy they will be airbrushed shades of green. Also a usefull tip for painting shields i picked up a long time ago is to leave them on the sprue untill they are done to make them easier to hold.

Your work is very good. The metallics look great as does the red. The flesh on the elves look a little to yellow. Are you using tamiya's flat flesh? If so I suggest adding some flat red to it but be careful because a little red can make an enormous change to the colour.

The flesh has been painted Elf flesh and then wasked with brown ink. I still need to go back and paint on some highlights so smooth it out.

Thank you for the comments on the Metalics, i do them by first painting the metal with tin bitz and then a fairly hevy dry brushing of shining gold before washing them with brown ink or the brown wash GW do.

The red on these guys has been painted with the foundation paint before heavily dry brushing with Red Gore and then blood red before being washed many times (about 6) with very very waterd down red gore before a fna wash of black.

well done but you might want to tin your paints down a bit.
Especially the red.
And the troll needs a couple of greys and browns on the skin.

nice colour scheme on the galadharim by the way. 8)

Okay its been a while but im working on some articles so i dont want to give to much away. The Elves are almost done, i will get some photos once they are finished. That should be tomorrow as all i have left to do is stick the shields on. The troll is stalled untill i decide what to do with it. So i started on some warriors of the dead and this is them almost complete:
Image

And then some Elven cavalry. These have been painted with the light grey foundation paint and then drybrushed skull white. Th riders have just had a coat of merchanite red on their cloaks to match the footsloggers in my army:

And finaly a Balrog which i am planning something special for the wings:

Okay i have finaly got my Balrog model back from a GW shop where it was on display for a while and ive taken a couple of photos. Sadly the article wont happen as i forgot to photograph every stage, the special bit is most of the model has been airbrushed. The wings where entirely done with an airbrush and most of the body was to. In the films the balrog is just a ball of fire with smoke for wings and thats what i was trying to represent.

And some recantly finished Elves:

Gandalf the white:

Some Elven Cavalry

I really like that Warrior of the Dead, he's got a really good "glowing" effect. :)

Thank you. I was trying to recreat more the look in the films with a hint of reaity with the rusty weapons and metal. Next thing i want to try with them is to sculpt some army of the dead and have them cast in clear resin and try using some inks.

Nice work on the Balrog Ollie - it's good to see a different approach to this figure, it is rarely done. :yay:

The elves look good, as well is their overall colour sheme. But I would wash the warrior of the dead's armour and weapon with some washes (bb or dm). I would also wash the balrog 'flesh' with bb.
Just to make them ook a bit more natural.
And one question: you said you would give those elven riders another cloak colour, but they've got the same as your basics.
Or did I missed something ?

No i wanted the cloaks to be the same colour as the foot troops to tie them in as one army.
