On re-reading The Fellowship of the Ring, I noticed that Frodo was scared off by Maggot's dogs 30 years before his flight from the Shire. So, just how long do dogs live in Middle Earth? Are they from Numenor and blessed with very long life?! Or, are they different dogs?

Sharp eye there, I never would have noticed, but come to think of it, you're right!

I have no idea....from the wording it appears they're the same dogs....will have to do a bit of research and read that chapter again myself.

Lol, you have too much time on your hands Nathan. Shouldn't you be sculpting something or at least painting your backlog? :P I think you should add a third choice - 'who cares? It's just a story.'

Are you trying to say that you don't have time to READ?

I am shocked!

Last night saw the casting of a few minis and my backlog is coming along nicely - Uruks galore!

It wasn't until about sixth time I read LotR that I noticed in some subordinate clause something like "and then nothing happened for Frodo during the next 17 years". :)

I have always liked Tolkien's style of just mentioning it when nothing is happening instead of writing a few chapters of nothing happening, but that was a bit hard to notice...

I must have read the trilogy about 10 times since I was first introcided to it, and have never noticed it.

Hobbits live for quite a long time very easily, so maybe it has something to do with their lifestyle, which perhaps their animals share. I think they masy well be the same dogs from 30 years before.

It is true I don't read much at all - but reading is one thing, and analysing or scrutinising is another. It's a bit like watching a movie and picking out the faults or errors instead of enjoying it for what it is. Entertainment.

Just my opinion of course. :)

heres my explanation (thoroughly researched):

they were most definitely blessed with long life. it is said that they were once great kings (of dogs) whose reign was long and fair. some say that they were in middle earth even before the elves, and that they fashioned five of the rings of power. it was only the power of Faramor Maragort (also known as farmer maggot), an ancient numenorian lord of terrible power, that the reign of the great dogs was brought to an end. wielding the arcane scythe of [insert the name of something really impressive and mighty here], none could stop him. without their magic, middle earth fell into darkness. then sauron came along and the lord of the rings trilogy happened. everyone thought that it had been sauron who was the ultimate bad guy, but he was merely a puppet of the supreme master. even now, farmer maggot bides his time, waiting for the moment TO STRIKE AGAIN!!! middle earth, beware. only by freeing the dogs will you be saved.

or something like that anyway.

Perhaps they are not the same dogs, but just new dogs.
The dogs of farmer Maggot are just widely feared by hobbits.

Farmers tend to keep dogs and hold on to the best offspring too, so my guess (for that is all it can be) is that old Maggot has always had dogs and everyone in the area is afraid of them.

Actually, that is pretty much like the Clan Dorth reputation - we have always had 'feisty' canine types here so people tend to respect our privacy, and that situation has lasted a lot longer than 30 years. Woof woof grrrrrr...

Great catch! I would guess that they are different animals, just trained and treated the same as the ones who chased Frodo. I'm surprised Tolkien didn't catch this, as he continually edited the many printings looking for errors.

Lol i just happened to be rereading the book to :) i just got the beginning of moria. I should say they are new dogs. Or they have like special dogs back then. With a long lifespan. Maybe something like those humans that had it back then?
