Poor Gandalf will have to wait I think. That Winged Nazgul is just too fantastic of a model to wait to paint, I'm preatty sure I'll begin work on it as soon as it gets here. I'll be sure to share my progress with you guys here as well! :)

The Winged Nazgul has landed! :D

I began work putting him together as soon as he arived, and within a few hours I had finished him. I was impressed by how easy it was to assemble him, it only took a few hours as I wanted to be careful and let the glue set so the model was secure. This was the first large model I've ever assembled in the hobby, so I'm pleased with how I handled it and how great the kit was. I also did some work on the base, as I was not keen on having my Nazgul snacking on Galadhrim. I covered up the shield with greenstuff and then placed sand over it, all of the other weapons were filed down and then covered with sand. It really wasn't too much trouble at all.

The miniature is simply fantastic, and I can't wait to paint him up! :-D

Here are some of the pictures I took, first up is a picture of the spures:

And pictures of the fully asembled Fell Beast from a few angles:

Sorry for the terrible pictures, he's still a litle wobbily on his flying stand so I was a little wary of moving him.

Whoa your brother sounds heaps generous Josh, lucky you!
The Nazgul looks great so far, you've done a great job. I should get around to fixing my metal one which won't stand up because I glued him to the base too far to the edge...

The MT Gandalf is a fun model to paint, especially the face. 8)

Probs best to attach it to the clear stick after the fellbeast is painted. You don't want to get paint on the stick.

Thanks for the comments guys! :)

Well, he's fully assembled and primed now. I'm going to leave him alone tomorrow to make sure he's stable. I began to paint him today, but the color scheme I was using didn't work out very well, so I decided to reprime him. If you guys had any suggestions on how to paint him that'd be great. I want him to look similar to the Fell Beast in the 'Heroic Slingshot' section of this article. I really like the look of him, and would like to achieve something similar. :)

I also based him today. I based him witha Mordor style base so he'd fit in with the rest of my Mordor army. How's it look?

Image

And here's a picture of him. As you can see, he's a lot lower to the ground then the normal Fell Beast due to where the ball snapped off. I sort of like him lower though, it makes him looks as if he's swooping in on some enemy, similar to what the Witch-King does to Theoden in RotK. It's certainly unique at any rate.

Josh, he is going to be something special!!
Really like the looks of the base (looks better without that shield laying there like the GW version). :)

Great work on the base. I must agree that the lower position looks great, I wonder how many people will now purposely snap their flight stands.

Wow... you know, I'm very early in my LotR collecting... but golly... this is just an awesome looking piece... very tempting... I figure one day I will point my eyes and resources to the more impressive additions like this one, but only after I've proven that I can get the hundreds of plain warriors painted and ready for display first. I'm going to try and earn the privaledge... long way to go for me!

I also agree about the lower position... but I immediately thought of the retreat to Minas Tirith from Osgiliath... before Gandalf jumps in... and it was bowling for horses....

The base does look right... and I'm often one for "less is more" when it comes to things like that... doesn't need all the "debris" on it... it looks great just nice and plain like that.

Kudos!!! Any shots of the colour scheme you didn't like to begin with?

Thanks for all of the comments guys! I'm glad people seem to like him lower to the ground, at first I was really worried that it wouldn't look good and disssipointed by the flying stand snapping as it did. I guess it was one of those cases of inspiration springing from disaster.

I hope to begin with painting him today, I'm fairly sure I'll begin with the scales so as to get the messy drybrushing out of the way. I'll be sure to add pictures here when I do! :)

It's update time! :D

I finished work on the scales this morning, and took some pictures this afternoon. I'm sorry for the poor pictures, to be honest I'm fnding it a little bit difficult to photograph such a large model. If anyone has any suggestions on how to help me better photograph him I'd be much abliged to hear them. :)

Anyways, here he is. :)

Hey, it's looking good.

Photography is still something new for me with my minis so I don't know, but I do like to take photos a bit further back at max detail, then crop them, THEN adjust the resolution down to 640 x 480 for display on the site here. That way, I don't have to take shots that are way too close up first, the auto focus behaves better from a ways back like that, and I can choose what to display by cropping. I also use three lamps to light it (I know natural sunlight is best, but I don't have a convenient place to do that) from each side and don't use the flash, whether or not I use a macro shot or not.

I use Adobe Photoshop though, and LOVE the "save for web" tool that let's me take a shot of whatever resolution and quality and adjust down ever so slightly to fit the 128K 800x800 resolution requirements. It's super handy.

Cheers! Hope that helps a bit. 8)
