what if they blow the budget on SFX and were left with actors like the wayans brothers and adam sandler as dwarves?

could maybe try and track down the time bandits cast (those that are still alive) for some dwarfy escapades

Or they could pull an Eddie Murphy (the Klumps) and have JRD play all the dwarves. He did do multiple roles in LOTR.

A pretty good summary of the progress on the film.
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009/11/05/34166-hobbit-update-casting-monsters-costumes/
And a nice article with Del Toro on The Hobbit.(Total Film which was quoted earlier I believe but this is the full interview.)
http://www.totalfilm.com/features/guillermo-del-toro-on-making-the-hobbit
So, sorry if any of this has already been posted.

Looks like Del Toro will be making a cameo.

I believe so(But I can't find it officially being said.) I believe the entire design team(which did the LOTR trilogy) from Weta is working on the Hobbit. And my understanding of reading numerous articles, is that John Howe and Alan Lee will be back again,or there and back again I might add, for The Hobbit movies.

From an article about Lee's booksigning at Weta Cave seems to help as it shows that both artists (Lee and Howe) are in New Zealand regularly or are there now(working).
Quote:
LOTR artist Alan Lee will be appearing at the Weta Cave in Wellington to sign advance copies of his new book, a re-telling of tales from Ovid’s Metamorphoses by brilliant British poet Adrian Mitchell. Read More. His appearance on Sat October 3, like John Howe’s recent booksigning there, is reassuring in terms of Hobbit news as it confirms that both LOTR film artists are spending time in Wellington as production ramps up for the films.

A podcast from Weta with John Howe confirms his involvement in the film.
http://www.wetanz.com/listen-to-episode-x-john-howe-and-greg-broadmore/
The start of the interview is with John Howe and is mainly about his Weta range of sculptures of his artwork. But he reveals when talking about his staying in New Zealand.

I'm really looking forward to the Hobbit films however, I would feel a little more comfortable if it was Peter Jackson directing.

I really hope they don't make the films too light hearted. Gollum, the Spiders, Smaug, Goblin Cave etc should be creepy.

Any news regarding if Ian Holm will be playing Bilbo?

No, I don't think he will be playing the Bilbo in the movies

It has been stated elsewhere on the forums that he won't be.

Peter Jackson? He didn't do a good job directing LotR. But perhaps that is a little harsh...

I'm afraid you're probably in a minority of one with that opinion.

I gotta agree. I think Jackson brought across Tolkeins world brilliantly!

Yeh i hope the film does not go totally of the rails because they will have to maintain alot of similarieties to the LOTR films.

I am not particularly a fan of Del Toro's work either *cough* Pan's Labyrinth *cough*.

IMHO that was a great film. HellBoy 2, though, stank big time.

I also thought Pan's Labyrinth was a very good film...so I have no worries about The Hobbit, I'm sure the two of them will do a brilliant job on it.
