Well, I've already bought and painted over 70... But I refuse to base them so, he will.

At least I can play with unbased trays, safe in the knowledge that my Uruks have teeth...

About 5 years.

John, got any movement trays you could send me?

It would cost about £40 to get gw ones and the army isn't finished yet! That's ten weeks of my pocket money! I'm still wondering if I can find an alternative solution that will look comparable. The gw ones do look smart (based) and satisfy that ocd/asd need to order and regiment things in little compartments. Movement trays aren't on my list of priorities at the moment as I don't even have the rule book for wotr.

There are another 40 or so Uruks waiting to be painted, then I want to clear the rest of my backlog before getting some plastic aotd. When they are painted I'll revisit my first Uruks and rework the paint scheme so that they look more cohesive as a force. That'll be some time ahead because of all the backlog and the unpurchased aotd. Still, I'll keep hacking away at the backlog and keep telling myself not to buy anything until it's all painted. By that time, I may well have enough money to buy some movement trays (or an alternative) although I'm also going to need a few more of those splendid mini storage cases from KR.

After months of holding back, I've just got hold of some plastic aotd.

They aren't bad...

but imho they aren't wonderful either.

They fit in nicely with the metal ones (though seem just a bit larger as well).

My main complaint is that there is so little variety in the sculpts. Even though there are twenty models in a packet - 2 sprues worth - the sculpts are based on only three models! So, you get 8 of one type of 'skirt', and 6 each of two others.

You can make a few simple conversions with glueing on different shields and positioning spears differently but I want more variety than that so I've started converting and adding some sculpting. This first one's a bit of a rush job but, seeing as they are tattered and torn with the ravages of time, it doesn't really matter.

Looks great Natarn. I'm a fan of subtle conversions to keep all the rank and file looking unique!

P.S. Welcome back - long time since I've seen a post from you!

That's a nice, subtle conversion, and they painted up really nice. I don't have the patience to convert standard troops, only heroes really, so I admire what you are trying to do. I look forward to seeing the whole mob converted and painted.

Oh, and nice to see you posting again!

I'm not sure but I think it was the following:

Flesh - mix of black and mechrite red

Armour and mail - boltgun

Cloth and leather belts etc. - graveyard earth

All these were then washed with badab black.

Hi Brent and Jonathan! :)

It's nice to be posting again. For me, it's the first day of the holiday - so I made the most of the opportunity. Our new baby is great but exhausting and work is really busy and stressful. I love chilling out with a bit of sculpting and painting.

Thanks for the 'welcome back'; I like it here!

Nice sculpting. Your chain mail fits the mini better than the bits already on there, it has a more appropriate worn look.

I was given one blister of Iron Guard at Christmas, and I did a trade for another. For my birthday I was given some GW products that were great but not what I needed so I exchanged them for 3 packs of Iron Guard and a Dwarf Command set.

Now I've got a group ready for painting and they'll bring my dwarven army (all metal) towards completion - if an army can ever be complete!

What are your thoughts on those spikes on the helmets? I'm not sure I like them but if I take them off they might lose their distinctive look. Perhaps thats why the sculptors put them on - to make them look a bit more different from the khazad guard from which they were converted!

I'm also part way through a load of other projects (typical!): a load of metal Orcs, the last of my plastic Uruks, 6 metal berzerkers, 2 feral Uruks and four metal Mordor trolls. :)

PS. There are only 3 Standard Bearers left! Should I get some more metal?

I'd say keep the spike, since it will help keep them separate from the Khazad Guard (though the surcoats may help in that differentiation as well. Alternatively, you could paint the masks a different color than the Khazad Guard masks.

Please! I'm starting a new job on Monday, so after a couple week will receive a paycheck, some of which I'd like to use to procure one of those lads :)

Cheers,
Wolfy

I'd keep the spike on the mask (if only to make them look different from Khazad Gaurd).

P.S. Glad your painting up all of those Iron Gaurd.

I agree, keep the spike. What is your main colour going to be for the robes?

*ducks tomatoe*

Err...joking. You should keep the spikes.

Looking forward to updates :)

Keep the spikes...once painted up they look like they belong.

I would recommend that if you guys haven't gotten one of these models that you do...the miniature is outstanding and in fact I am going to go and monkey around with mine in a minute or two. :)

Okay, I'll keep the spike. Everyone else seems to be in agreement on that one.

The robes will be a muted blue. I think it's the 'Erebor' scheme. Some kind of blue mixed with scorched brown produces a lovely subtle blue. Then they'll fit in with my Khazad Guard and Dwarf Warriors.
