Put the Halfling Holes to the side to work on some more Far Harad stuff (call it hobby attention deficit disorder.

First up some bare metal and conversions:

Half Trolls:

Mahud Raiders:

Of course, I couldn't live with duplicate sets of Raiders... as my friends in Chicago say, I just don't roll that way. So I've converted two of them with some new poses.

Now with some pretty paint :) I really, really like how this Half-Troll came out. Its a little dark in the picture so you can make out all the details. The picture is also obviously an extreme close up and the minute flaws are exaggerated.

Here's my first Raider almost finished.

C&C always welcome!!

Nice work, Brent!

When you are only going to have a few of any particular model (like with the Raiders), it really pays off to do some simple conversions to create some individuality. The conversions are very well executed. Keep it up!

I got a new camera this week so I'm playing around with it seeing what sort of tricks I can do.

In the meantime, here's shot of my two Half-Trolls. I'm real pleased with how they turned out. I just need to finish basing them and they are ready to serve in my Far Harad army.

Hey Brent, looking sweet, but the bones are looking rather undefined. Perhaps giving them a wash will give them a little bit more definition as they look too white at the moment.

Brilliant work on those half trolls, I love their expressions. The one on the right seems to be glancing over his shoulder while the one on the left looks to be studying a fly or other small creature thats just landed on his nose, a true representation of a pair of witless trolls! Love them! :D

It all looks great Brent, I think the bones on the half trolls need a wash though

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I think the bones on the half-trolls look a bit better in person but maybe that's just personal taste. I'm going to show them to some of the people in my local gaming club and see what they think. I subtle wash may not be a bad idea, I was just hoping to use the stark white as a contrast to the very dark models.

Its been a long time since I updated my WIPs blog. Thought I'd post something I've been tinkering with and maybe get a bit of advice along the way.

I've been slowly tinkering away at my Rohan forces to build up some gaps for War of the Ring. Knowing that I plan to use the King's Guard as a mounted Legandary Company, I'd need to have access to a Mounted Hama model. Since he doesn't exist in that fashion, I'd have to take to a conversion. Here he is after the first few steps. I really, really want to try and learn to sculpt better this year so I hope to do a lot more extensive conversions that will let me practice my sculpting skills.

What I struggle with the most in sculpting is getting smooth putty. Even when I think I'm using the correct tools (clay shapers and a wet paper towel to keep them from sticking), it doesn't always work out for me. Obviously, these are some close up photos and it shows some of the inherent flaws as well. I was hoping to a better job on the scale mail skirt regions but I think it will be okay when its painted up. At least I hope so.

Actually the horse was taken from an old mounted aragorn blister I found lying around. The mounted Gamling would have been a good choice too. That probably would have saved me from sculpting the mail skirts as well. I'm not sure if I still have an extra Gamling rolling around somewhere - however regardless, since Hama will be lined up right next to Gamling I had use different Horses. :)

Ah, just read the bit about the clay shapers. Foor better results, try getting some variety in your tools for next time. Clay shapers are fine, but if you want some more things tht are better used for different tasks (like armour or chainmail) take a look at the sculpting tools on http://www.ebobminiatures.com.

Its been a long time since I've updated anything. I've been slowly picking up the tools and started working on a new army for a tournament next February ( ). I wanted to try something completely new. I'm using a very thematic army that I'm going with for the sole purpose of trying to take home the Best Appearance award. To that end, I've settled on an army called "The Unexpected Party". It comprises Thorin's Company (13 Dwarves), Bilbo, and Gandalf the Grey. Since its only 15 models, I've decided that all of them will be converted in some fashion. I'm going to have 3 Heroes (Thorin, Balin, Gloin), 9 Iron Guard (Oin, Ori, Dori ,Nori, Fili, Kili, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur), and 1 Dwarf Warrior with a Banner (Bombur). There are a lot of reasons I selected the profiles I did to represent these models; however, that's a topic for a different thread. This thread is to show off some WIPs that I've been cooking.

Here's the first stages of a few of the dwarves. You'll need to use your imagination becuase there is a lot of greenstuff work that will be needed. I'm still not sold on a couple of the metal ones. I may pull the limbs out and try something else.

Recipe - Dwarf Ranger Bodies with weapon swaps. Middle one has the arm from a Rider of Rohan. The right one has an axe from the Gimli MoM model.
