The two Rangers have turned out great - painting is very good. Might have to try this idea one day! 8)

An update at long last.
Image
At this point there is not much more than a wire armature and some putty to give the basic shape but this one is probably going to go faster than the last. I'm still having a lot of problems with the hands. Could anyone direct me to a helpful article or something similar.

Looking good!

I struggle a little bit with hands too. You could look at my WIP thread and you'll see some of the hands I have done on my sculpts.
I did them by having them wrapped round a piece of wire. It works for clenched fists, but not so much for non clenched ones. Go check them out.

Are you going to have armour on it?

To be honest, I think you should put much attention to the general proportions rather than going into such a details as hands. I mean if shade has to be at least more or less human shape, you should make puppet in human proportions.

Image

GS I believe is a bit easier putty to sculpt, but you surely can do it better. Just look at puppet from different angles. Young sculptors tend to sculpt things flat (especially faces) because they look at piece only from front.

Tho if you really nead this hands tutorial there is one really advanced, by Scibor

http://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,scu ... php?id=508

I hope it will help.

Oh, and I may write a little hard critique sometimes, though I do it only when I see potential and will of improovement, so do not be angry or so. ;)

I need criticisms or I won't know what to do, though I'm not getting enough here. Thank you Silverhand, I'll try to work on it. I feel my arms are always too big. I think it is because I forget about the shoulder when I make the puppet so that the arms are too short. Making a puppet like yours next time should help. I'm going to get GS as soon as I can, I might be able to get some from overseas at Christmas.
Here's the latest update.

Oh, and does anyone know if you can search the galleries, it would be helpful to see some examples from other people when I start on a project.

Looks good 8) I like his lunging forward pose. The folds at the bottom are good, but for the folds further up I would suggest making them longer and more together. Right now they look a little too short.

I like its pose. :)

I will gladly give you criticisms to help you.
The torso is a blob. It has no structure to it. I wouldn't worry about it on your second sculpt, but just keep it in mind for the future. remember, it usually slims down at the waist. You have done alright, but the front of the torso lacks structure. I love the back though. 8)

Sculpting things like shades and ring wraiths is a good move for you to make. They aren't incredibly detailed and don't need to show all their legs and stuff. Just keep practicing. Keep sculpting, but always keep in mind the anatomy of a human body. The puppet that Silverhand showed you is a good example.

Keep it up :yay:

I'm going to re-sculpt the upper part of the mini. I don't quite understand what you mean samoht, though I think you're saying that the clothing should cave in at the belt line. Is that right? And I'll make the folds longer, should they come together more at the collar or at the waist?
Yes I did mean the galleries on one-ring. Is there a way to search them for a specific image. For example, if I wanted ideas for painting a dwarf ranger is there a way I can find those without going through a whole bunch of different galleries?

Here is the redo at last. I'm quite happy with the back though I'm not so sure about the front. So what do you think? Should it be redone again or is it fine the way it is? What should be improved on my next project? etc.

One more question. When I was working on it in art class, a kind of extra for those in AP art who need extra time for their projects though I'm not in AP so I just use it for sculpting, my friend said that shades are bigger. Are they on cavalry bases or is he just being obnoxious again?
Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Oh yeah, I forgot to warn you that shades are actually on cavalry bases. You can see it here.

http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_Cus ... 45x319.jpg

Here is what GW has written about them on the site.

"A Shade is an amalgam of tortured spirits, held in eternal bondage by the dread sorcery of the Witch-king of Angmar. Few living warriors can stand against such a creature".

So, its actually just a ghostly body made of multiple spirits.
You could keep it as is and just transfer it to a bigger base that you have or that you make, or you could make this a Barrow white instead. As seen here http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_Cus ... 45x319.jpg

I like how you have redone it. It looks a lot better. With the front, you may want to make the chest area a bit more raised. Just a bit. Or maybe slim down the waist. But I really do like how its going. Keep it up.

I have actually been wanting to sculpt a shade for ages, and seeing someone else start one has encouraged me to start. So thank you for that.

Oh well, I guess it will be a barrow wight after all. It's a good thing that I just decided that a barrow wight would fit better with my army as a shade costs so much and does little good with my friend's/opponent's fiefdom army.
I've finished one arm and I'll raise the chest, gives me an opportunity to fix the three folds which looks more like a warg's claw mark than folds. Good luck with your project.

Are you gonna give it a sword?

And are you gonna make more than one Barrow white?

As opposed to pink or green? :P

Just kidding. A sword would look cool, but I don't think wights actually used them.

No, I won't be giving it a sword. I'm working on the hands though I might end up giving it a hand off of a goblin I converted. I'm considering making a second, though we'll see how this one turns out first.

What do you think about the arms? I plan on extending the robe next time I get around to sculpting it. As for white, I think the skin will be blue. The cloth will be brownish grey, though I might try some reverse highlighting with a whitish blue glow form the chest with some alternative source lighting around the hands, in the hood, and on the ground below.

At first I was going to do it the same way as the wraith, but I wanted to a faint bluish glow inside the hood with. I plan on creating a hood right over the neck hole, probably a thiner layer using my hands and then covering it with another to give it a smoother finish.

Here is the latest update. I've redone the bottom of the cloak as I wanted it to look like it was floating in the air, but I'm not sure I did it just right.

What do you think? Is it OK does it need a lot more work? If the second is the case, in what way?
