very nice . . . if you water some elf flesh down to almost a wash and put a couple of layers on the nose and cheeks it could make the skin look even better i really like the trousers

Thank you chaps, I have been impressed with what i have done on this model. I forsee a new painting era!

I have highlighted the flesh a little with elf flesh thank you FoF.

And a little go at freehand. The white is a bit blotchy on the horse, but i have since filled it in a bit more and every time it looks that bit better.

so thanks everyone. I shall make 1 more update with the base done and any ammedments suggested. Then the project shall be finished.

Now seeing as the effort i put into a 1 man project, i really admire the people who can do lots of high quality miniatures with NMM and other really super tidy features. Looking at the To9G thread here. Namely John and Bart.

thank you chaps! :-D

Looking good, extra kudos for having the bottle to tackle doing the eyes but I have a couple of suggestions.

The skin is still too dark. Perhaps use Dwarf Flesh to brighten it up a little, even if you need to wash it with Ogryn Flesh afterwards. I ended up doing this with my Dunlendings/Wildmen, as the Devlan Mud was far too dark.

The gold on the end of the flag needs at least one more coat, as the green is still showing through (unless it is a reflection).

Diversity! The trousers, sleeves, belts, scabbard and banner pole all seem to be exactly the same colour. Either lighten some of them, or use washes to darken some to add slightly more contrast to the mini, otherwise you will run the risk of it looking like a green and brown blob from a distance. The same goes for the cloak/Orc head and the boots/rock. I know I've championed using a tight palette on numerous occasions, but you need to add some variety. As an aside, any chance of a pic focused on the Orc head?

The freehand on the banner... I don't know why, but the Horse head, whilst it still needs some work, has a definite likeable quality. I'm quite taken by it. The symbol on the otherside, not so much. The lines are noticeably different widths, so, you would probably have to tidy the edges with green to thin them down and get it looking symmetrical, and the symbol is badly aligned as it sits closer to the bottom of the banner than the top. For future reference, either sketch out your banner design on some scrap paper until you are happy with it, or very lightly draw it onto the model with a pencil. That way, you can fiddle about with it until you get it right, rather than adding loads of layers tidying it up. If you feel that your brush skills aren't quite up to the task, varnish the model then use an artists pen to draw in the design (normally in black), then varnish again to seal it. The beauty of this is that any mistakes can be easily wiped off with a damp cottonbud.

re. the skin. yeah i do agree. I have already added a few lighter tones around the focal points of the face.

re. the Gold. hmm, i can't blame the camera here. I shall add a few more gold coats shortly.

re. Diversity. I disagree there, although it might be the flash, the highlights aren't too bold nor faint. I know thats not what you are directly saying here, but i think the diversity is quite nice, for my standards anyway

re. the banner. As much as i like the constructive critisism, it is my 1st ever attempt at freehand, so you have to allow a little room for error, particularly the alignment issue. Yeah i started too low... and yes, the lines are damn dodgy. Although i won't make many changes to the round icon on this banner, i shall keep all that stuff in mind for the future.

cheers.

James

Great mini, mate! You're getting better and better! ;)

The only thing I have to comment on is the face... it kinda looks like the bannerbearer got his head stuck in a wind tunnel, and his face is beyond repair, LOL  I'm just messing with you... he looks great, although I think his right eye is a tad too big ;)

Keep it up, Jamesy :P

Great job James, nice freehand 8)
I've always wanted to paint a rohan banner-bearer but I have no idea at all how to start doing those white horse-signs. I feel like giving it a try now that I see yours!

Now that I see the fig as good as finished, I love it even more and agrees it totally fits in the Rohan-theme! Well done finding this one! 8)

Amazing job, James, in my opinion this is your best model yet! 8)

The cloak really stands out in my eyes, the highlighting and shading are very well done. All of the armour has a nice feel to it as well. A good first try at freehand, a lot more bold then my first attempt.

Keep up the awesome work, James. :)

Well, I have managed to squeeze in something.

Bought 6 cavalry bases so can introduce cavalry into my wotr games now too.
Image

I was quite inspired after seing Michaels nice wotr bases, so grabbed those colours which i will use for them.

Now, I have loads of old scrappy boring bases, so i am trying to make them a bit more socially acceptable. So heres what bases need to be done.
Image
(the army of the dead bases are terrible, looking at the green ink and white which has seeped onto them)

and here (below) is what i was trying out to keep em simple to get em all done quickly. Just painted scorched and drybrushed bleached bone (which is a fab colour for drybrushing i must add!)

Image

thanks all

James

Ah The Big Base Repaint I wondered if you'd show some of it here on OR.
The bases look good, especially for how simple the process is! 8)

And thanks for the honourable mention!

Excellent! A nice base with subtile elements such as a bit of static grass, foilage or anything else is always great, as long as you keep it subtile!
Looking forward to what you will do with them James!

I remember myself stepping away from the bases with just pure unpainted sand and half of the base covered with a pile of static grass, I was so pleased about how simple it actually was to make a little more "pro"-looking bases. A nice base will do your paintjobs the justice they deserve mate!

8) Great step forward!
