I like the red aswell Josh!
Red is of course a bit different from the other colours to get it highlighted without turning out pink.

i usually highlight Blood Red by adding Fiery Orange to the red and using it for highlights

To darken down the parts closer to the armour (as it would look like it was under a shadow), mix up the Blood Red with a small amount of Chaos Black and water it down to a kinda milky (thickness and transparancy, not colourwise) liquid and apply some layers where it must look darker. Don't use a completely wet brush though, just wet enough to leave a trace. The first ones won't give much result, but once you add a few more, it will get nicely darker till you're satisfied

I believe I used this trick to paint the red on my Isildur and Elendil figs (articles in library)

I've seen many dwarves in the past years and while I love blue on them most of all, Red + Green or Red + Blue give great results aswell!

Well, thanks to Bart's wonderful reply, I'm probably going to stay with red. Even though I'm having trouble with it, part of the fun in painting is the challenge. :)

The recipe I'm currently using for the cloth goes something like this, start with a basecoat of an even mix of Scab Red and Red Gore, wash the recesses (and now also areas with armor close by  ) with an even mix of Scab Red and Chaos Black, highlight this by adding in Blood Red to the original mixture, continue doing so until satisfied, then finish it off with a highligh of pure Blood Red. Does that sound alright, Bart?

One of the thing that saved red, is I can't wait to see what it looks like on the Tower-Shield of a Vault Warden, with golden shield rims...

Thanks everyone for the help, but especially Bart! If I had any, a gold coin would be heading your way. :D

My Dwarf Command 1 should be ariving either today or tomorrow, so I'll begin work on that when it arives, and after that, I'm taking a break from these confounded Dwarves... to move onto confounded goblins.

:D Goblins!

I like the red cloth with the gold armour on the Kazad Guard, I'm glad you're sticking to the red scheme. 8) :yay:

Thank you, theavenger001. :)

That is one of the main reasons I stayed with red, it complements the gold armor nicely. Truth be told though, I've not been pleased with the level of painting I've been achieving lately, I know I can do better then what I've shown, hopefully that changes soon.

I'm looking forward to starting the goblins, I've got most of the scheme figured out, I just have to figure out how I wish to go about painting the skin. Luckly, goblins have a lot of different skin tones, giving me a good oppurtunity to test out different ways to paint them. :)

LOL John.

Yes, my ideas for painting goblins leaves next to no area un-washed (Somewhat ironic, as I doubt goblins bathe much  ). Saves a lot of time with an army such as Moria, and still gets great results.

These guys should be good practice, as I've been thinking they'd make a great army to potentially join To9G next time around. :)

Thank you, Michael. :)

I'm actually painting the banner-bearer today, and did a little more work on the Khazads. So, you guys can look forward to an update later today.

As promised earlier, I have another update for you. I've been working on my banner-bearer, and as of now have the cloak and the silver areas finished. Here you are,

Back,

My apologies for the poor images, believe it or not but its been raining all day here in Vegas, giving me poor lighting for picture taking.

The highlights are a bit sharp on these one. Try several stages, each with an increasing stage of red.

One slight problem is also that your base colour is still purple-ish..

Sorry if this was all negative, I'm having a go at this constructive criticism. 8)

No worries Sean, critiscm is always welcome. I think my main problem was that I was a little to liberal with my last highlight, there actually are five layers of highlights, they were just obscured somewhat. Not sure what you mean about the purple though, can you expalin a little more? It may simply be the light in the photo, as I said its quite overcast today.

Thanks for the comment, Sean. :)

What I mean is that the base colour you have used seems very purple-ish. have you mixed Black with the red? What colours are you using?

I find that using a Scorched brown + Scab red, and then pure scab red make a great basecoat.

Talking about basecoats, it might just be the black undercoat showing through a bit?

The base color is Scab Red, and some low areas were washed with Scab Red/Chaos Black. Red Gore and Blood Red were used in a variety of mixes for highlights.

Looking great Josh! 8)

I agree with Sean though, the highlights look a bit sharp on the cloak. But other than that it looks great.

Thanks, Billy. :)

The highlights are a bit sharp, I was a little to heavy-handed with my final highlight, and it concealed my 5 layers of hard work. Lesson learned, I guess. :(

Well, it can be hard to see red highlights, and the colour you used was a dark red colour, making it even more hard to see highlights

Okay guys, so the highlights were a little sharp. I'll keep that lesson in mind from now on. Other then the highlights, what do you like or dislike about it? I'm fairly pleased with the blending, normally I'm not very good at it, but I think it turned out alright this time.

Perhaps a bit late to say it now when you've already painted it, but I think it would look better with a more brownish red colour, you know, like the dwarf army I showed you before when you made a post and said you were back.
