Wow, fantastic as usual. What game are you making it for and are you making it up as you go along or do you have plans?

Hi Dave,

Greg is going to make up a quick-play version of something more complex he's got in mind. It will be simple enough for a participation game but will be a serious wargame and not have the hilarious oddness that Pax had. Once he has something more solid to talk about, he's going to catch up with you and Andy about playtesting - if you're interested.

Greg mentioned that the game will most likely use a d20, and will have modifiers depending on cover, weapon strength, rate of fire etc, with the resulting number over a certain mark being the number of hits you achieve - something like that. He's better suited to explain it all though. He is planning on doing a more complex version for his own use (and hopefully for general release).

His blog -> http://jurassicreich.wordpress.com <- has some interesting fluff and will be worth watching over the next few months as he posts up some of the rules and the scenario.

Have you seen the Dogface GI figures we're planning on using? They are pure comic book heroes and have a lot of character. The sculptor, Kosta, is also doing some German Dino-riders to go with them.

I've done an update on my blog, but I'll post some shots here anyway.

I took a couple of shots tonight of the gatehouse as it stands at the moment. The images are a little off-colour because I didn't use the flash and it's a bit dim in my kitchen. Ah well.

The second one shows the rear of the gatehouse with a test paint job on the bottom section of the stone work (the upper wall is just undercoated). I'm pretty happy with it because I think it has a nice contrast to the timber framework, and should look cool with ivy and other creepers climbing up it.

The last shot shows the rear wall of the Great Hall. It's made of foamcore with four cast sections of stonework glued in place as 'cladding'. I made the 6"x4" panel of stonework a couple of weeks ago then moulded it, and now I cast it as many times as I need to - saves hours of time and reduces the boredom factor significantly.

Dave, the castle is mostly based on a real one in Transylvania called Corvin Castle and is an odd mixture of elegant beauty and extreme spookiness. Another influence is Schloss Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains in Germany - I visited there many years ago and actually saw a ghost (honest).

I have drawn a couple of concept sketches and even worked out some of the architechnical aspects of it in Sketchup, but I don't really have a plan for it.

I experimented on a couple of spare stone sections until I was happy with the colour scheme, but this is what I used to paint that wal section.

Spray paint it with Chaol Black, making sure to cover up any parts I don't want covered (such as windows, timber framework or unfinished foam pieces). I then give it a going over with diluted black acrylic paint to fill in those parts the spray paint missed.

Next, I use a variety of greys and browns, thinned down to a very watery consistency to paint individual stones. I use P3 or Vallejo paints mostly, so the paint names won't mean much to anyone here probably. I avoid using 'bluish' greys for the stone work, so Codex Grey and Fortress grey were not included in my palette.

I start with the darker colours, so Vallejo's Panzer Grey and P3's Battlefield Brown go on thinly. The watery consistency means that the black basecoat shows through and you get more of the stone texture as well. I mix in to these colours a variety of other browns and greys, such as P3's Gun Corps Brown (close match to Graveyard Earth) and Kommando Khaki and randomly paint different stones with each colour, mixing them wet on the stonework.

Once it's dry, I drybrush the lighter stones with Khaki and the darker ones with P3's Cryx Bane Highlight (grey), and then give them a wash of Black and another of Brown. I then fix up any stray brush strokes or other untidiness with some black or grey.

Then, I use some white raw pigment powder (from good art suppliers) and brush it on in between the joints to look like salt damp.

A final spray of Matt Varnish and it's finished.

Sounds complicated, but the result is good, so I might try it. 8)

8) Looks great like always!!!

One question: What polifilla do you use? Could I use Woodland Scenics Hydrocal? When should I press the sponge on the surface? At once or should I wait for 5 min. or so?

Polyfilla is a bit different to Hydrocal and isn't as sloppy. If you can't get Polyfilla and have to use hydrocal, then I'd wait until it just starts to set. It's impossible to say exactly how long to wait, because it depends on the temperature and humidity of the air and the type of plaster you're using (I use dental plaster mostly).

You'd need to mix the plaster quite thickly in order to spread it over the surface, otherwise it would just run off and make a mess on your workbench.

Whereabouts do you live Atan? In Australia, Europe and the UK you can get Polyfilla - and Canada too I believe. It might be a little difficult to find in the US though.

Thanks for your reply Dagorlad.

So I`ll go for some polyfilla then - it was just that I had some Hydrocal at hand...
Soon I`ll visit my local hardware store... It`ll be no problem for me to get some polyfilla.

Keep on going - great work :yay:

Ok, technically, this is not part of the castle, but it will have its nest on the top.

This is the first Jurassic Reich miniature I have painted specifically for the game. Click the thumbnails to view the full sized image.
