No wonder that they want to go to Bag end so desperately .... :P

Brilliant sculpting , as usual Natarn !

Beautiful work as usual Natarn, i am very impressed with all the attention to detail. This pro-create stuff must be very easy to use

Kidding, im stunned by the precision and care you have put into this. My favourite part has to be the door and its knocker and keyhole - brilliant! :D

The wattle discussion was a fun read also :)

keep up the great work mate

Ok, here's number one, very nearly completed. I'll be making a mould next week and seeing how the casts turn out.

Next...
Halfling hole two

(and the dragon of course).

Thanks! :D

Yes - I hope so.

Well, I'll see how the casts turn out but I think they should be very successful.

Woah! I know its been said many a time before, but just to reinforce it, your sculpting is amazing!
It looks like you'll be able to buy a great different halfling hole on each side of the planet soon :)

:D Thanks, Radagast. I thrive on lots of encouragement and a bit of constructive criticism (from time to time) so really appreciate your comments.

I'm thoroughly enjoying learning to sculpt on this scale and in such detail. It really is great fun and one project just leads to the next because my mind is buzzing with ideas.

ProCreate, green stuff (kneadatite) and milliput are the putties that I'm becoming familiar with and they all have their uses.

Milliput is cheaper and I find it harder to handle. It doesn't hold detail so cleanly but it is really easy to smooth. If you add some water to tools, it behaves a little bit like clay and can be smoothed really nicely. Milliput is a pain to prepare. Sure, it's easy to mix it, but it's very sticky and leaves a coating all over one's hands. Being an irritant, it's a great idea to wash hands immediately after mixing, before continuing to work with it. One great benefit of milliput is it is easy to file, sand, drill and cut when it has cured. You can't do this very well (if at all) with gs.

Green stuff is a bit more expensive (especially if crazy enough to purchase it from gw stores! Get it on eBay - 36 inches) and I still haven't really got to grips with it (apart from sculpting scales!) I don't have the skills yet. I find this extremely difficult to smooth and blend. It needs to be stuck to the model within two minutes to adhere properly.
It's a pleasure to mix because it is not sticky and leaves no residue on the hands. Again, it's a good idea to wash your hands. Don't lick your tools to moisten them... just get a glass of water and dip them in that.

ProCreate is more expensive still, but you get what you pay for. It is very easy to mix and sculpt with. It's far easier to smooth than gs but not as easy as milliput. Procreate is amazing at holding fine detail and is less rubbery than gs. It yields better to tools. I always find I'm fighting with gs.

I hope this helps any budding sculptors. The best bet is to try some of each and see what you think. For my next halfling hole I will use a mixture of milliput and procreate for different parts of the model.

Cheers!

Thanks for the mini-review Natarn. I'm going to order some Pro-Create and give it go.

I've also used Fixit Sculpt (purchased from Aves Studio in the US). Its more clay like than Greenstuff. It smooths nicely and cures rock hard. I've used it quite a bit on some projects (like the Mumak and others).

The finished hobbit-house looks wonderful - I hope all that fine detail comes out in the test casting!

And thanks for the appraisal of the relative merits of the sculpting materials.

Couldn't have put that putty review any better myself. You certainly do seem to have acquired a vast amount of knowledge in such a short space of time.

Ah, I remember the days when my sculpting was first met with amazement and praise here. It's all good fun. If I can be of any help at all to you starting up with casting, just shout. My door is always open (although at the rate you're going I'll soon be asking you for advice!! )

Thanks, ukfb. I reckon I'll certainly be asking for more advice before long!

Looks good Natarn! I like seeing all these Hob, er halfling holes popping up from the ground.

By the way, are you keeping a running tally of the number of scales on the Dragon? Can we have a guess the final number contest or something?

That's a fun idea!

Unfortunately I don't have a running total. I could count them...
If I count what I've done so far (marking each with a pen), I could then keep a record of the ones I do in future. :)

Today I've been making a mould of hh1. Ah, the pong of ammonia! Latex is such fun. It seems so much simpler since learning how to use it when making a mould for my fort - and because this is on such a smaller scale, it's running really smoothly and faster than the fort. Maybe I'm more patient too.

this sounds like a tiny starting point (or better: starting scale) of insanity ...
to enhance this state I'd recommend to write an article and post a pic of every single scale plus describing its personal shape and character and what it meant to you to shape it at it is ... ;-)

I've nearly finished the mould of hh1. :D

Now I'll need to let it vulcanize (image of Spock flits through my mind) which'll take a few days, and then it'll be test-casting time!

Fascinating, captain...

That could be your next Quiz question - How many scales are on Smaug?

I used milliput for the walls and chimney because it's so much cheaper and does the job fine.

Looks great Natarn. I'm loving all this progress. Your sculpting speed is nearly as amazing as your sculpting talents.
