Very nice hobbit hole...you an Alan should go into business together and make an entire miniature replica of the whole Shire. :D

Personally I would have liked to have seen the Hobbit hole with more of a scale-style surface. Just to keep him in practice while he's taking these breaks.

I sculpt scales in my sleep!

Daub, doorhandle and doorknocker.

It was fun covering over that wattle!

I like this picture. I've finished the little doorhandle and the doorknocker.

It's coming together now. :D

Thanks for all the encouraging comments.
Cheers,
Natarn. :)

Beautiful work - the lock and handle plus the knocker bode well for any future move into figure sculpting - you should be able to translate that fine detail work into buckles, brooches, helmet and armour elements and decoration.

I wish I could sculpt. Maybe if I take my socks off and uses footses as well, Preciouss?

That is just amazing work!

What do you use as your sculpting tools? I have a modest start that has been fine for limited work I do but I am trying to learn more about what's out there in use by others.

I have used just three tools for this project: my old favourite (as seen in my round fort article); a similar metal tool with a flat knife edge at one end and a smoothing/pushing shape at the other; and my new, and first, scalpel.

Each one serves its purpose. The scalpel, obviously, is great for the fiddly diddly work such as key holes.

I tried to build up a few layers of texture in this daub. It'll be great to paint!

I tried my stone roof idea out but it didn't work well, so it's back to tiles.

With my first attempt at the roof beams I used match sticks, but they didn't fit in with the rest of the model. Off they came and out came the putty for sculpted beams.

Looking at this hobbit hole, I am guessing it represents one that has seen better days - otherwise the plaster would have been patched up again. There is a good stout door and lock so the owner/previous owner had some prosperity at one time.

So now I am trying to work out which hobbit would be living there... (named character or family)... the Sackville-Bagginses, perhaps?
