Hi folks. As you know I am thinking of re-introducing a variant of the old rank system we used to have here. It won't be ready for a while yet, but as I'm planning it I started thinking about the names of the various ranks. There will be a rank 0 - which will be the lowest level at which a new member starts. As they gain standing in the community and earn coins, they can trade them in and gain a new rank. But what to call that first and lowest rank? I've had a few ideas (from reading far too many fantasy books) and would like your help in deciding what we should call our members of that level... |

I went for 'Peasant'. It's a lowly title, but not quite as belittling as 'serf' or some of the other variants. In my opinion, at least. And out interest, if the title system will be based on coins as well as contribution, will the current ranks get a redux/be affected or stay the same? |

The ranks will be reset to 0 for everyone (except the Ringwraiths) so yes, they'll be affected. but everyone will get a grant of 5 coins to start and those who have already written articles will gain coins to the appropriate value, so can level up quickly. Other ways of earning coins will be:
The system will take me a while to write and I'm still busy finishing off the basic site redesign - so don't expect it anytime this month (or next either probably since I get really busy at work this time of the year - whipping the elves and making sure they don't slack off packing toys for the good little boys and girls). |

How about some titles more related to LOTR specifically? Gardener Curly-Haired Hobbit Child Shire-folk Lesser Son of Great Sires I'm sure we can think of some good ones. |

In Shakespeare's time, the cheapest places in the theatre were for those standing on the floor in front of the stage - the better off sat higher up, in some cases even on the edge of the stage. And the name for those occupying the cheap no-seats: Stinkards. |

Thinking about it you don't get much lower than a Goblin in middle Earth - why not have the first step on the ladder as a goblin? @Dorth - just think of the sambuca opportunities with all those new goblins to fire at |

I voted peasant but am not really exited about being demoted back to one. Thats a bit like reaching the top row on Snakes and Ladders only to slide all the way back to square one. Ah well. It will be a challenge climbing the ranks again. |

@ the Pink Furbie formerly known as DMS: What goblinses are you referring to? Is this The Hobbit induced dirty rush we are anticipating at the end of 2012/start of 2013? |

I voted for Commoner. I like the idea that you must rise from the unwashed masses to a position of respect and authority through your contributions to the community. |

I changed the poll to allow up to three votes. So if there are more options you like, please feel free to add them in. Oh, and Dave (UKFreddy), you have at least 3 articles in the library which will earn you 30 gold coins straight off so that'll take you into the next rank and 15 coins off the third one. |
