Welcome to the Sculpting and Converting challenge. Please note that this challenge will last from now until midnight on August 31st due my belated posting of this thread. This month you have chosen....

Trolls & Ents

Image

The outstanding piece above was constructed and painted expertly by the One Rings very own Bizzarewarstar

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
You may sculpt more than one character should you choose to do so but please bear in mind only 4 finished pictures can be submit for the vote.

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... aswell as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of August 31ST 2013 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, aswell as scratchbuild materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

I may submit 4 pictures for each piece or for all pieces I have done, and then (lets say I did 2) first piece get front and right shot, and then second gets back and left? :P

And I have already started, but did not have internet last night, could not do a proof pic. I should do it tonight.

Awesome theme, love it! Very convenient for me too. I'll be sculpting a Troll, based on the books and the Tolkien Bestiary picture of David Day. I wonder what others will be doing!

Great work so far silverhand. I look forward to what everyone comes up with. I probably won't be entering this time, but I'll watch for sure. (And great idea to showcase bizzarre's awesome ent/troll model as the topic pic)

As long as you take a proof pic of the model in its current condition before you start your conversion work then no prolems.

I will be sculpting an Isengard troll for this competition.

Here is the proof pic and some progress shots.

When the sculpts are finished, are we allowed to give the figures a light black wash with some watered down paint just to bring out the detail? Because most of my figure will probably be white which is hard to see.

Hey, new contestants :) Nice to see somebody else is also participating.

More WIP photos of my troll. Lately I do not have that much time, so little progres and poor photos, sorry about that

Some fine entries to be seen here already!

Since I begged for ents, I guess I also should deliver an entry. Here's my pic of proof then. ( I will use a few ent parts I got from ebay bits, natural materials as sticks and such and modelling compound)

Yes. Inking or lightly washing the finished sculpt is an acceptable method of showcasing the details. Many suppliers do that for their catalog photos. Bear in mind however that should you ever look into casting sculpts, then inking is not advisable before moulding as the paint fills all of the details you spent ages perfecting. Better to ink the first casting than the original sculpt in that case.
