Painting Challenge: Orc Shaman!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the November Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being an Orc Shaman. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of preferred miniatures in order of most preferred to least preferred:

  • Orc Shaman (mounted or unmounted)
  • Uruk-Hai/Goblin Shaman
  • Orc Captain (or another type of Orc)
  • Any other Shaman model

If you are unsure as to whether something will be elligible for entry, just post asking or PM me and I will let you know whether or not you may use it, as this months challenge could be open to many different alternative figures.

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of December 3rd, 2011 (the extended deadline is to make up for my delay of posting this thread). WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. In previous painting challenges, the winner and runner-up recieved prizes in the form of gold coins, however with the websites current situation, gold coins are not available to give as prizes, so no prize is available at the moment.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

Not 100% sure I'll keep up on this one well with some twists life has thrown, but I want to use it as a kick-start at least. This may look like a certain Isengard Warg master but don't let it fool you. Next time you see him he will be a dark shaman of Dol Guldur. I've had this conversion planned since before WotR came out for my SBG force but never got around to starting him. In WotR I plan on using him as either a generic shaman or (more likely) with the Druzhag profile.

Sounds interesting. I've often considered a Harad King in a chariot. I don't suppose your Orc chariot will have Wargs pulling it? That would be really cool!

I currently working on my Orc shaman conversion. Once I've finished the conversion (before I start painting) I'll get a proof pic.

Pose isn't done, the staff will be in the warrior of Minas Tirith and he will have a sculpted hand out as in a pose of casting.

My shaman is based on the Sharku model. Main reason for this is I really wanted a model that had both a foot and mounted version, and I really liked the bent over stance of the foot version for what I was trying to accomplish.

My concept developed initially years ago. I wanted a Shaman that I could use with my SBG Dol Guldur army and in that system any mounted models should have a foot version as well in case the mount gets shot out from under him. Additionally, the options GW had given for Shaman looked much more like they belong in one of their other game systems than in PJ's Middle Earth. Considering the presence of the Spiders of Mirkwood I figured it would look cool if my shaman had a spider-skin cape similar to how shaman and medicine men of some Earth cultures wrap themselves in the skins of powerful animals from their area.

When WotR came out with its Epic Heroes I expanded my game-plan ideas to think he could also be a decent Beastcaller substitute. Again, I'm not very thrilled with that goblin with the swarm of bats. As I'm far more likely to summon Giant Spiders or Wargs anyway, I think this looks right in line with that as well. So in WotR I'll probably use him mostly with that Profile. For one, this will give me a little more magical punch. But in addition it helps me in the area of ally limits since my Dol Guldur army is based mostly on Mordor list with MM and Angmar allies. Now I can keep my Ghost count up and use him to pull in a couple Formations of Giant Spiders at no cost.

I started by trimming down some of Sharku's original back ornamentation. I then took the legs from a plastic toy spider as I just couldn't get them looking good enough myself. Likewise with the spider's head. These were glued in place on the model first, then I sculpted the spider's body in place and textured it. The spear is from the good ol' days when GW sold bits. I have a second one that will be used for the foot version so they look identical.

I have the modeling part done, black basecoat, and applied my test colors. These are basically the base colors for each area and will be dulled / highlighted from here. Just wanted to see how my color options were looking. I have him presented below with one of my Giant Spiders so you can see the theme. I have my spiders painted in one of two ways. This model is done in brown with dark green markings and the other model is done in black with red markings. As these are my favorite of the two models it was the one I used for the shaman's cape.

I'm stuck on my Golfimbul :( i dont know wich theme to use on his cape and base... because I'm undecided between a snow base or base of land beside a river....ahhhh  what i do now? only that is missing

I prefer the snow base beside a frozen river, "the frozen river seemed interesting to me" and his cape kinda look like a wolf pelt or something, looks realy warm, and he has warm protections on his legs

but....i don't know if i can do it right...the frozen river and the snow...

but could be also just simple land, a little cold but just land

opinions please...

[EDIT] well im going for the snow theme and frozen river... 8)
