I've got a game coming up with a friend of mine, no idea what he'll be using although he's pretty partial to ringwraiths, and was hoping you guys could have a quick look at my list:

Eomer
4 coys - mounted royal guard
3 coys - grimbolds helmingas
3 coys - oathsworn militia
6 coys - Erkenbrands riders

Allies
Thranduil
3 coys - wood elf archers w longbows and elven cloaks

Any suggestions would be great, cheers

Erkenbrands riders should probably be exchanged for Erkenbrand as an Epic Hero (better special rules and the flexibility to jump to another Formation if needed) and an equal number of RoR.

Also, consider swapping the militia out for bowmen. Between them and the Elves you can hang back and shoot to weaken enemy formations as they close, then tie them up with Grimbolds and smash their flanks with the RoR / Royal Guard.

I agree with Beowulf03809... Here's a good army list:
Eomer 90
Erkebrand 75
3c of grimbold's Helmingas 145p.
3c. of oathsworn bowmen 60p.
4c. of royal knights 140p.
8c of rohan warriors 240p( if you want two formations of four companies)

Allies
Thranduil 125
2c. of wood elves with longbows 90p.( Because the points would be more than 25%)
8)

awesome guys! that list definitely sounds more flexible and balanced, the only change was breaking he rohan archers to 2 companies and adding an extra to grimbolds seeing as its probbaly going to have to absorb a bit of damage (the unfortunate task of the anvil). I'll definitely post up some pictures soon in The WIP section and hopefully the battle report as well!

Few choises, no magic, no very-powerful heroes, no siege engines: Some reasons I thought 8)

Also, they have probably the worst cavalry in the game, KoMT, Morgul Knights, Harad Raiders and warg riders are all better, the Royal Knights are probably the better cavalry in Rohan.

I would also say that Angmar is the hardest army to play, with Rohan coming in second (or 8th, depending on how you count?).

Cavalry in general is pretty fragile in WotR so an all cav force is going to get killed pretty easy if it isn't very careful, and Rohan has a lack of good infantry choices and as has been pointed out their cav is not as good as it should be.

Not to say they CAN'T be played effectively, it is just harder to do.

Angmar is ok with lots of Carn Dum.

Yes and the same goes for Rohan as it does for Angmar - they have some very good Common choices and work well when these are used.

Oh and Elves are the worst force in this game by far. Forgottenlore, you meant "apart from Elves, since they are obviously hardest to play." Right? :)

I like Rohan's infantry choices very much. They lack the sheer cheapness of Morranans and WOMT but to be honest those are undercosted anyway (let alone a certain D4(6) unit for 20pts...) and if they were 30pts like they should be, then Royal Guard on foot would compare very well and Oathsworn Militia would seem like a more reasonable alternative.

Why doesn't someone have a big competition to see which really is the worst of the 3. You just need a dozen people t play Angmar, a dozen Rohan and a dozen Elves. Then have a competition to see the second best out of Isengard, Dwarves, Gondor, Misty Mountains and Fallen Realms. :)

I think an even better idea would be for those advocates of Elven power to craft a detailed tactica to clue 1. my opponents in on what they are missing and 2. Me in on how they could ever be worth their absurd points cost.

Before anyone else (I know you've seen it Gothmogthewerewolf) retorts, yes a great one does exist for Angmar and the beauty of it is that it is for all the not-so-good units, while Angmar players still have a few really good units for a decent price.

Rohan has decent 20pt infantry plus quite nice 35pt mounted and foot troops (these compare well overall, just not to the undercosted ones) and some great heroes. There are definitely good lists to be had in there and I'd much prefer them to Elves.

One thing I would never take is any of their legendaries, aside from Elfhelm's Riders, which are expensive but quite useful.

In which he advocates bow over melee Elves and then refers to Galadrim Knights as 'rock solid'.

And then allies - an avenger bolt thrower :P

Post subject:  Re: 1,000-1,500 point rohan force

Not to sidetrack, but as a Wood Elf player I'd say that bow over melee in WotR is critical as much as possible. With the simultaneous combat of WotR vs. the "win the fight and you can't get hit" process of SBG, getting into a slug fest with almost ANY opponent is going to go badly for your D3 army. Your models are overpriced and fragile and most likely facing under-priced, over-powered models likely supported by a couple under-priced Nazgul and overpowered supporting Epics. Your opponent will most likely have a larger army with cheaper, more survivable troops that take 1/3 of the casualties that you do in a typical fair dice exchange (and then bounce 1/3 of those back at me with Khamul). You need to weaken them for as long as you can, leverage terrain, special rules, magic and Heroes and try to level the playing field before swords ever cross...just don't give into the same cheeze that may exist (counselor spam, etc.).
