A quick note to users to say that the use of "+1" seems to be on the increase on the forum. +1 is not a valid answer guys and peoples work and posts deserve a better response than this. Please refrain from posting this from now on. +1 to acknowledge agreement with a previous post and then a reponse is acceptable of course. simply answering a post with +1 is a waste of space! Oh and if anybody answers this post with a +1 I won't be held responsible for my actions |

at the very least put something interesting afterwards like: 'i think its good because...' words to use instead of +1: 'indeed' 'i agree' 'i thought that too' |

SidTheSloth wrote: at the very least put something interesting afterwards like: 'i think its good because...' Exactly right Sid - give the previous poster a bit of feedback to, after all this is a "discussion" forum |

I often would like to give some one a compliment on their work but have little to add. Some kind of "Like" or + system similar to the "times viewed bar" would be nice. I am sure this suggestion has been made before |

I'm in whafrog's boat - a 'like' system would definitely reduce discussion further, which is a bad thing. |

I have been told I am so "old school" because I prefer to not use short hand -- such as lol, wth, +1... Although I agree that it is more constructive to express thoughts fully, I believe and appreciate in the freedom of expression. Not that +1 expresses much. This topic may seem unimportant to many, but I've lived in a communist country before -- not a good experience. I fully enjoy the freedom of expression that I currently have and appreciate every drop of blood that protects this basic right. Wow, getting too serious... have to go and play LOTR now before I give myself brain fatigue. Thanks for your patience. |

I don't see any problem with using the expression +1 as long as you add something else in and comment on their work. For the 'Like' idea that sounds good, but I agree it could result in less replies or comments |

perhaps have it that you can only 'like' when you comment? |

I am sure this suggestion has been made before +1 ...err... I mean I AGREE... Sometimes there are opinions and posts that I agree on and there would be nothing further to add to the discussion, having a like button would get rid of those single line posts where nothing much is added to the discussion because it has been already said. Plus when looking at a W.I.P post of pics, I'd rather 'like button' it than drop a line of "Well done". I do not need to become an "Elven Elder" anytime soon. Along with a like button, should there be a dislike button? Wouldn't agree on that. If there's something to dislike or disagree upon, a follow-up argument as to why would be necessary. So DMS you're laying-eth down the law now huh. Inch by inch, slowly the corruption of power will turn you into a full fledged Wraith! How long will it take? |

I think a '+1' button would be alot better as you could 'like' a comment but not necessarily agree with it |

Plus One - is that ok? On a more serious note it [word deleted] me off seeing a lot of +1s around forums. I would rather say "[person] is right". |

Surely it can be an answer, depending on the question? If, for example, somebody asks how many extra attack dice a cavalry model rolls when charging what do we reply? Or if someone has a math problem -3+4=? |

As the oldest Mod on the forum I must say that our policy has always been keeping people on topic, getting rid of the obvious bad stuff (It's a family site with younger members and you can't post stats or sell stuff ), people boiling over into arguments and stopping people just posting trivial responses to posts. The +1 thing seems similar to the "I agree - I agree - I agree" trend in response to a post that occurred on the One Ring for a while. It added nothing to the forum and was discouraged. To me the idea that people have to think about replying stops you having to wade through mush to get to the content. From my viewpoint if you have nothing really to say then don't say it, if you have then we welcome your views and we might come back with our own. |

There are plenty of times I see a great post, but have nothing to add. Then it sits there all lonely and ignored. |

Yep I'm pretty sure - I'm not the oldest Mod I don't think in terms of membership but I'm older in age than both Brian and Alan, so I'm the oldest of the staff. pah The One Ring policy on posting has always been not just posting for the sake of it. Having said that, sometimes when you are congratulating people then it might be allowed to post a small reply but generally responses to posts should be on topic, not vulgar, not flaming people, not selling stuff and not posting official GW stats. I think our policy and welcoming nature has allowed a truly international, friendly and informative site to prosper despite the best efforts of some on the Internet to bring us down. |

As I read through the post I realized my suggestion would not work for every thread. It would be pointless on a rumor thread. One the other hand I would like to encourage an enthusiastic beginners painting or acknowledge some ones work on a wip thread. The like option would be nice. There are only so many times you can comment on primed black figures but I feel there should be some way to encourage people to post. Don't know what the answer is |

+ 2(3/6). +1 is sooo unoriginal. I don't see the point in a Like button myself but if its easy to implement then why not. As long as theres also a Dislike button. |

The 'cool mini or not' site has a vote and comments and I always wonder if bad votes might put off a potential new painter whilst a comment, even though it is critical, might be better. Perhaps a like / don't like thing might be even worse if a beginner gets a bunch of don't likes against his work ? I don't know but my gut feeling is that our system of positive comments works ok. If Alan could come up with a solution that allowed a 'like' response would it be a good idea to deploy it ? Might it spoil what we have ? As you all know, the One Ring has been an encouraging place for newcomers, with the advantage we have had and still have some people on the site with great skill in various aspects of the hobby. Other posters can point out where a member can improve without ever seeming condescending over their effort at painting etc. |
