You may be aware that Brian and I are currently redesigning the site layout. Well, it's almost complete. I need to do some further testing and fix a few glitches here and there, but it'll be ready to upload once these are done. I expect to upload the new version on Sunday (Oz time - the middle of Saturday night UK and US time), so when you wake up on Sunday the new site be waiting for you (or will be a broken mess and I will be tearing my hair out). There will no doubt be a few broken pages that I've missed, so please be patient while I get around to fixing them. |

Can't wait to see it! Is the new design a radical change, or fairly similar to the old one? |

I am really looking forward to it Alan! I'm sure there's been a lot of work put into this from yourself and Brian and I'm sure it'll be fantastic! Cannot wait! |

Sounds interesting! Although I sure will miss the old layout. I've had some fun times here. Please don't make the facebook mistake of attempting to impersonate twitter. Your fans will not be pleased |

The new design will still be recognisable as the One Ring - a lot of the existing graphics and colours will still be used. But the layout is being streamlined and simplified to make it quicker to load and easier to find your way around, plus I am cutting out a number of pointless computations that phpBB does with each page-load - stuff like language translations and grabbing table names from a defined list of constants. For each and every page load here there are around 350 calculations being done that I have managed to avoid. Whiel a computer can do 350 computations in a blink of an eye, it starts to add up when there are 100 users online. I estimate that during our busiest periods, this will save something like 5 million calculations per hour. And that is really just the tip of the iceberg to be honest - if I had more time and was feeling really enthusiastic I could cut out 5 times that many unnecessary computations. |

Sunday will be arriving one hour earlier as the clocks go forward an hour in the UK and Ireland this weekend - we will be on Summer Time (Dorth looks out window and is not fooled by the sunshine as it was trying very hard to work up to a hail shower just a few minutes ago.) |
