I haven't built a board myself yet, so I can't help you with material choices etc. Foldable legs seem very difficult to make and will add a lot of weight to the board (thus making it more cumbersome, etc). If you want it to stand by itself, I'd just put some real legs under it on the spot. You can also make very broad supports (we used to make them out of big plastic boxes until we cleared a proper table to lay our gaming mat on) and just rest it on top of that. For size, 6'x4' seems standard, though I (addicted to huge Napoleonic and WW2 battles as I am) would make it larger. Remember, you can allways use a non-crossable modular river to make it smaller if you want. |

Quote: What kind of wood should I use? Plywood? 1/2 inch construction grade. http://woodworking.about.com/od/plywood ... Grades.htm Quote: What measures are prefered? I will be playing both LotR and WH40K on the board. 4'X6' Quote: I will most likely place the board on the kitchen table but please share your advice concerning attaching foldable legs to the board. see links http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... -100048820 You may want to frame the plywood See links http://woodworking.about.com/od/shopequ ... able_4.htm Note a shop table needs to be way stronger than a gaming board but the principle is the same. For the kitchen table you might want to get a two inch 4'X8' of medium density Styrofoam and paint it. It will be much lighter than plywood and cost about the same as mid grade plywood. You could even cut it in half and hinge it with duct tape. I made a ten 4'X6' tables like that for a convention. They lasted a few years but I cut them up and started using the folding legs in the first link with plywood tables instead. |

My table is 4' x 6' x 1/2" MDF cut in half to 2x6. A dining table can support it without additional legs and it can still fit in my Hyundai Accent. |
