Painting Osgiliath/Gondor Stone

I'm half-embarrassed to post this question as I'm a fairly experienced painter but it's really bugging me so here goes...

I like the creamy color GW uses in photos of the Osgiliath ruins and that warmer tone runs true for the scratch build Gondor buildings shown in the WotR rule book. I just cannot decipher how they achieve it.

Anybody got an informed idea what the formula is? My guess is Codex Grey, drybrush Tausept Ochre, lighter drybrush Bleached Bone and a thinned wash of Gryphonne Sepia. Or something in that direction.

I know I should just experiment, but my paint time is very constrained and I'd like to make it count. Has there been an article I've missed? Has anyone achieve something similar?

Well what I do is just coat the building black, dry brush the a light grey & then I do another dry brush of white. Then I water down some green and use it as a mould or to show dampness.. just my method. There are many different ways.. and maybe it might work better if you just have your own. tweak it a bit etc.. Don't really know what colour for GW paints, I use large pots for my buildings.

Yep, don't use any grey. Or black.

Do a base coat of Kommando Khaki, drybrush with Beached Bone and then again with Skull White. Experiment with those colours on a spare wall section and you'll soon find the right formula for a warm, off-white colour that looks like natural limestone.

I spray black; coat of dheneb stone; heavy drybrush a mix of 1:1 skull white & dheneb stone; drybrush skull white.

Sure thing, here's a picture of some stonework done using the technique I suggest above, although I stopped short of using the skull white:

Okay, closing the loop here. I figured it out - more or less.

Prime with Iyanden Darksun.

Drybrush lightly with Fortress (or Codex) Grey in widely spaced swaths. (Simulating strata of variation in the stone)

Drybrush over all with Bleached Bone

Very lightly drybrush irregularly with Skull White (optional)

QED. (for me at least)

This is great to see. I am getting ready to start my first terrain for LOTR and was wondering the same thing about the stone color scheme. Glad to see I wasnt the only one wondering.

I'm a little surprised you guys are using 'expensive' hobby paints for terrain. I tend to use cheaper art-store bulk size acrylics. Matching the colours can be a bit hit and miss, but its do-able...

For the amount I use, it's pennies, and not worth the matching hassle.
