Post subject:  Table

I think it is harder to decide what I want to to than to make it.
I would suggest a cross roads or river crossing. I do not attach my hills and trees so that I can use a different set up if I want.
This is a link to an example I built years ago. I like that bridge so I built the table around it.

The best thing to do with a 4' x 4' table is to make a flat grassy surface, perhaps with a road through it. Then make some modular pieces you can place on top of the table and move around from one game to the next. Making a highly-detailed sculpted table means that games quickly grow stale as you are always fighting over the same landscape.

I have made close to a dozen game tables in the past few years, and the four that get constant use are all basic tables - a desert one, two grassy ones, and one swampy beach table.

I agree with Dagorlad on the idea that you should make a modular terrain table, although you can detail them to some extent, if that's what you're aiming for. Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money or willing to compromise quality, I wouldn't recommend a 4x4 forest :).

A large part depends on what you want to do on the board. Do you want to make a board to game on, or an epic that might be a bit fragile and awkward for play? (Among other questions)

I like the Osgiliath idea, although it could be difficult to come up with something high quality. A village of Rohan also appeals to me, as I'm a fan of elevation in terrain.

...a basic sand/yellow grass table is in my opinion the way to go. From there, the board options are unlimited. You could make a Rohan village, Osgiliath, Pelennor Fields (which fits well with your Gondorian troops), etc... Make sure the terrain you make is modular, so that you can customize each battle to your heart's content ;)

WHat about the far outskirs of Osgiliath. It's just a plain board with small ruins and some trees on one side. Some small rivers etc.
You don't have to have a lot of terrain skills funds for that.

we finnaly decided on a breelands board, simply because it fits all of our model types and can be put with our other modular boards.

I think you need to decide if you are firstly looking for a gaming board or a display piece. If gaming then Dagorlads idea would work best. If however you want a display piece then something around your current quantity of figures would be better - I agree with Raggbur suggestion of Osgiliath.
