Hello everyone, me and my bro were planning on making a shire countryside board, but we didn't want to use GW flock for grass what should we use ':?'

Indeed, GW grass is really too expensive. I always use Spectre Hobbies (http://www.spectrehobbies.com) when I order grass, as I find it relatively cheap. Just an idea

'Javis Country Side Scenics' is also a good supplier. They give you around the same amount as GW but for 1.50 quid (UK supplier)

It really depends on where you live though... you don't want to end up spending a lot on shipping to get material from abroad, when you can get it much easier from your own country...

In flock and static grass department , the first choice for me is Gale Force Nine, beats all the others in range and quality IMO.

If it still matters, I bought NOCH brand static grass and a grass mat for a Shire terrain piece and they are both splendid products.

Its well worth buying a few different types of grass otherwise everything looks very samey.
Try ebay, I've seen stuff on there quite cheap. No harm in getting an opened pack from someone selling off their old stuff if you can find a bargain.

It would be crazy slow, but you could try ripping, cutting or blending up a sponge. if you could find something like breadcrumbs that wont rot then you could try that.

Before I got packets of flock, I went in the garden and got some dirt and just mixxed it up in green paint. Not as nice but its free.

You can use a blender or food processor or even an old hand cranked sausage grinder to make flocking. Sponge or the foam from the miniature package will work. I like to spray paint the foam first. I let it dry first then chop it up.



Remember flower paste? I might work but it attracts bugs and mice.

Sand and dirt work well. I find that it is easier for me to mix glue with paint and a little water then paint or spray it on and sift the sand on top. This works for saw dust as well.

The U tube link was very helpful. I use dye in a big vat of hot water to make flocking from saw dust. I had read about it but have never tried to make flocking by adding saw dust to paint. It will be much easier to make small batches of lots of colors. Thanks that was a good tip.

By the way for long grass and reeds I found that cocunut husk works really well. You can buy it from pets shops and stuff, they use it for pet bedding.

Noch is a good product and they actually make the majority of static-grass out there anyway.

GW + other well known brands = Noch
woodlands scenics is also owned by noch, but seperate production and types of static-grass.

there is an awful lot of re-branding done in the scenery market, so its always worth asking if the same product can be bought under different name for much less in price.
