by default a digicam measures the whole area/matrix but focuses the middle object/area usually.

but what if this object is not the one you want to get sharp (because it's a tree, a stone, a sword in front, accompanying minis) but a certain mini slightly behind or more in front?

most digicams do have focus measuring/remembering this for short time. this means you can turn the camera onto an object or area which distance you want to have sharp/focussed. you then press the button slightly and hold it. such a certain distance is ‘taken’ by the camera. if you now turn back to your object, still holding down the button, this object will be sharp now.
you then press the button further to the final ‘click’.

also have a look at your camera menu and find several focus options like automatic or manual and experiment with those.

My Canon camera has an option for focusing on the centre point instead of the camera trying to guess where I want to focus. I have found this a very useful function because sometimes the camera would guess that I'm trying to focus to the paper behind the miniature. With terrain in the picture this becomes even more important.

Some cameras also have manual focussing capability. If you have depth of field preview, use it: it gives a good indication of whether everything you want to be sharp is actually clear or not.
