A couple of good friends of mine are developing a skirmish game that is based around the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers style stories of the 1930s and 40s. I was curious to see if anyone here is interested in that era - the glory days of Pulp!

Heroic space pilots flying their rocket ships between the planets, beset by space pirates and all manner of alien dangers, with a ray gun in one hand and a trusty sword in the other, these intrepid adventurers would rescue the fair princess from the evil emperor, destroy the giant death ray cannon, and save the galaxy all in a day's work (and be home in time to play a round of polo at daddy's manor house).

The game is in a very early stage of development at the moment, but I thought it might be interesting to see what other people thought.

Sounds pretty cool. So, I'm guessing that it is set in the time where men were men, women were women and small fury creatures from Alpha Centuari were small furry creatures from Alpha Centuari.

You need to include some Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy references as well as all of the 30's era space stuff.

Sweet! I am definitely interested in anything with a space-based setting. 8)

The first mock-up looks better. More vivid and it captures the 'theme' of 30's Sci-Fi better.

Thanks. Yep, you're not the only one who has said that. I think I will try to make it look even more like an old pulp magazine cover too. The only issue with that cover is that I'm not sure of the copyright on the image.

I first saw the original Flash Gordon series in the early 1980's when I think it was the BBC put them on in the mornings as part of the Christmas programming. It was pure pulp sci-fi, with every cliche in the book. My strongest memory was Wilma ploughing the spaceship nose first into the ground and Flash commenting 'Good landing, Wilma'. Hysterically funny.
As for the game, I think it is a great idea, as long as it catches the fun side of that genre - the Brian Blessed moments ('Flash Gordon's alive???' at 200 decibels). Those figures are very much in keeping with the 1920's-30's, even 40's style. The 'Ming the Merciless' figure appeals - very reminiscent of Max Von Sydow, indeed.

In case any of the younger viewers are wondering what I am jabbering about, here is a link to IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1905497600/tt0080745
