Does anyone here play Starfleet Battles, the Star Trek ship combat game? A friend of mine introduced me to this "classic" a couple of days ago and I got totally hooked. I've been playing the solitaire Cadet Training missions and can't wait for our next game session. Sigh, another game to rob time from LotR playing... :)

I had really liked BattleTech before, but after seeing the much more sensible movement/shooting system of SFB, I'm beginning to have doubts.

I don't play it but have looked at the huge range of models rules and supplements available (there are some fantastic big models and I recall seeing pictures of a Star Trek wargame involving dozens of ships that were about 30-50cm in size - plastic kits, I believe though some were serious conversions). I suppose familiarity with the Star Trek universe makes it a more approachable genre.

To boldly go... splitting infinitives across the universe...

Should I curse the two of you now or later?
Star Trek has always been my favorite Sci-fi show (bigger fan of the original series as that is what I grew up on)...I really must not look into this game, I spend too much money on LotR as it is right now, another hobby would send me to bankruptcy.

Not to worry, from http://www.starfleetgames.com/starfleetbattles.shtml you can find a downloadable PDF that will keep you occupied for a while. Of course it is meant to lure you to buy the boxed set and all the supplements so beware... ;)

Ok, I've been checking these miniatures out for the last 1/2 hour or so and I am in big trouble!

I am so getting this one...possibly more! I really don't need anymore hobbies! :D

SFB was an early favorite of mine, back in the days before miniatures for it though. I have three big binders of rules / supplements and four boxes of cadboard counters and maps. Probably enough hex-covered star fields to carpet a 10x15 foot room. Oh the good old days.

I haven't looked at the game in about 12-15 years though so I'm not sure if the rules changed much. I really liked the ship management and detail though it did get pretty bogged down when you had large fleets to control. I think our biggest game was four or five of us each playing about 6-10 ships. It made for a long Saturday but pizza helped.

That sounds like so much fun...but I think what saves me from delving too deep into this hobby is I literally have no friends that love Star Trek as much as I do. So a couple of models from that site and back into LotR for me. But having some friends over and playing a game of Star Trek would be a blast. :D
