Thanks for the kind words! Yeah i know what you mean about the bases..... Maybe ill try some new styles out on other forces when i get round to it. Ive just never been a fan of using modelling sand on small minatures like dwarves/goblins as it makes the scale look off in my eyes. However that wont stop me doing some research and possibly looking for a finer grain of sand.
In the meantime im just using GW stirland mud texture paint, dry brushed with karak stone and flocked with GW static grass. The rims of the bases are GW XV-88. Although i must say they look a lot better in person than in that picture
No problem, compliments due where they're deserved!
On the whole, I avoid grass and foliage with Dwarves, I find it makes them seem a little less unique, and in general their habitations are less grassy and more barren rock. Of course, they're your miniatures so it's down to you ultimately. If you want to add grass, add grass, no one can stop you. But here's a couple of tutorials I personally swear by when basing my own Dwarves, they're perfect for recreating landscapes comparable to Moria, Erebor and the Iron Hills. For example, I used the second one for Thorin's Company and the Goblins, swapping the 40K elements for pieces of wood and boardwalk from Goblin Town =
